James N. Hauslein, BS '81, MBA '84
Mr. Hauslein is currently Managing Director of Hauslein & Company, Inc., a private equity firm and was previously, until May 2001, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sunglass Hut International, Inc (previously NASDAQ:RAYS). From 1987 to 2001 Mr. Hauslein was a principal shareholder and from 1991-2001 served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Sunglass Hut, the world's largest specialty retailer of non-prescription sunglasses and significant retailer of popular price point fashion watches, with almost 2,000 company-owned Sunglass Hut, Watch Station, Watch World and combination stores in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. Sunglass Hut products included leading sunglass and watch brands such as, RayBan, Revo, Armani, Nike, Oakley and Fossil. Sunglass Hut was acquired by an investment group including Mr. Hauslein in 1987, and grew from $23 million in sales in fiscal 1986 to $680 million in fiscal 2000. The Luxottica Group (NYSE: LUX) acquired Sunglass Hut., (NASDAQ: RAYS) in April 2001 for over $680 million in cash.
As part of his private equity investment activities through Hauslein & Company, Inc., Mr. Hauslein served on the Board of Directors of GLG Partners, Inc. (previously NYSE: GLG; a $25 billion in assets alternative asset manager sold to Mann Group in November 2010), Liberty Acquisition Holdings Corp (previously NYSE ALternext US: LIA and a $1 billion SPAC – merged with Priza in November 2010) and Elephant Capital LLC (a publicly traded private equity investment firm headquartered in Delhi India). Also, Mr. Hauslein serves on the boards of smaller, growth oriented business including Clintec (Scotland based clinical trial outsourcing company) and Inmoo.com (Los Angles California, internet based independent movie distribution).
Mr. Hauslein received his MBA in 1984, with Distinction, from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management, and he received a Bachelor of Science Degree, in Chemical Engineering, from Cornell University in May 1981. He is a member of the Advisory Council of the University wide Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise program, a member of The Johnson Graduate School of Management Advisory Council, the Athletics Advisory Council and is an emeriti member of the Engineering College Advisory Council.
Mr. Hauslein is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Boys Club of New York, a member of The Board of Directors of the Jamestown Foundation (Washington, D.C.), is a Director of the American Swiss Foundation, a member of the Chairman's Council of Conservation International (Washington DC) and is a Trustee of the Pine School (Hobe Sound, Florida). Mr. Hauslein has guest lectured in undergraduate and graduate level programs at Cornell University, and at executive management programs at the J.J. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Hauslein has appeared on a variety of business news programs on CNBC, CNN and Fox News. Mr. Hauslein supports a variety of philanthropic causes spanning the arts, wildlife, the environment, and education. Mr. Hauslein enjoys many outdoor sports including golf, tennis, SCUBA diving and flying.
