Michael E. Chen, MBA '85
Michael Chen is currently the General Partner and CEO of Chen & Associates, a firm he co-founded over 15 years ago, providing advisory services to the media, aviation, financial services, and food industry. In addition, he also serves as the Strategic Partner to the President of Grace Farms Foundation, which is creating a new innovative space in New Canaan, CT, called Grace Farms (www.gracefarms.org), and recently opened in October 2015 not only as an architectural marvel, but also a place to engage the world to help people live better lives through five key initiatives: nature, arts, justice, community, and faith.
From 2012 – 2013, he also served as the Management Partner and Strategic Advisor to the Chief Investment Officer (CIO) at Bridgewater Associates, where he was focused on providing strategic advice and execution of new processes to help build a great future for the company.
From 2010 – 2012, he was the President of NBC News’ Strategic Initiatives Group & Education Nation In this capacity, he was responsible for identifying growth opportunities for NBC News and overseeing several key news division properties, including Education Nation and NBC Learn. In addition, Michael Chen sat on the Board of Directors for The Weather Channel.
From 2006-2010, Michael was an Officer of GE and President & CEO of GE’s Media, Communications, and Entertainment (MCE) financing business with over $9 Billion in assets, and $100MM+ in net income. In addition, he was Chairman of the Peacock Equity Fund, a highly successful venture capital JV between GE Capital and NBCUniversal focused on digital media properties which produced a 40+% IRR during 2007-2010 prior to it being sold to Comcast Ventures.
Michael started his career in 1985 as a financial analyst for IBM. He joined GE in 1994 as VP for GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). He was named Senior VP and General Manager, North America in 1999. From 1999-2006, he grew net income 500% for this region, and was awarded the GECAS Presidential award twice for his work on Air Canada and Frontier Airlines. He was promoted to be a GE Vice President and Officer in 2006.
Michael currently serves on the Advisory Council of the Johnson School at Cornell University and also has previously served on the Board of Directors for the Norwalk Community College Foundation and the Advisory Board for Sodexo Corporation. Michael has been featured in Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, and the syndicated radio program “The CEO Show.” Michael was named as one of the nation’s top sales and customer relationship individuals in the book “Secrets of Great Rainmakers” and was awarded “Dealmaker of the Year” in 2008 by The Executive Council. Michael is a regular public speaker at conferences and universities on the topic of “Developing a Personal Brand for Success” using his unique “4 I’s” model.
In addition, he received the “Distinguished Service Award” for Norwalk Community College in May 2010, and the “Who’s Who in Asian American Communities (WWAAC) Leaders and Legends Award” in August 2010.
Michael was born in New York City. He received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an MBA from Cornell University. He is married with four children.
