Robert W. Staley, BS '57, BME '58, MBA '59
Bob Staley is a Senior Advisor to, and a retired Vice-Chairman of Emerson Electric Co. Just prior to retirement he was Chairman of Emerson Electric Asia-Pacific. Following military service and several marketing assignments with The Trane Company, he joined Emerson where his service spanned 25 years from 1975 to 2000. He served in a number of management and operating capacities including Chief Technology Officer, Vice-President of International, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Division President, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of Emerson Asia Pacific. He was a Director of Emerson for 17 years.
Mr. Staley grew up in the mid-west and attended Cornell University, receiving both his BME ('58) and MBA ('59) degrees. He was a member of the 1957 World Champion Cornell crew, and is a member of the Cornell Athletic Hall of Fame and the U.S. Rowing Hall of Fame. His interest in Cornell has continued and today he is an Emeritus Trustee and a Presidential Councillor. He also serves on the Asia Advisory Task Force, and the advisory boards of the Graduate School of Business and the Athletic Department.
From 1995 to 2000, Mr. Staley lived in Hong Kong and Tokyo and championed Emerson's growth in Asia. Convinced that Asia is the new economic frontier, and that U.S. relations with all Asian countries must be mutually rewarding, he continues to consult in this region of business activity. He recently retired from the Board of the U.S. China Business Council.
Mr. Staley served as Chairman of Ranken Technical College in St. Louis and has been on the board for over twenty years. Since 1958, he has been married to Elizabeth Chapman Staley; they have four daughters and eleven grandchildren.
