Happy Thanksgiving!  While I’m enjoying a few days away from Ithaca, its been a busy time for us first years with a lot to report back on. Picking up from my previous post, I participated in the Battle of the Brands competition sponsored by the Marketing Association.  It was a fun and intense competition that I learned a lot from that I think will help me as I move into a brand management role.  The competition was fierce and, although we had a great overall campaign Team SpeedStick came in second place. Here is a photo of me and my teammates celebrating at the end of the Sage Social where we sold out ALL of our product! (shout out to Val, Sabina, Joe & John)

We also celebrated Halloween Johnson style with an all-out Halloween rager that brought out some really inspired costumes. My favorites were the binders of women, my Battle teammate Joe dressed as Novak Djokovic...

We first years are in the second week of the second half of the core......and I can already tell that this half is no joke! Break seems like a very distant memory at this point. As mentioned in an earlier post, this half we are taking Statistics (or Sadistics as Professor Joe Thomas, former Dean of the business school endearingly callls it), Finance and Strategy. A new twist on class that keeps things errr..... lively is that all three professors utilize cold calling in class. This is a departure from the first half of the semester and I have mixed feelings about it.  In addition to preparing for the unexpected class shoutout I am also working as an admissions ambassador this quarter. During a break between class one day a week I am leading an info session and tour with prospective students who have come to check out Johnson. Today was the second such session and it is nice to be able to provide information and input into the Johnson experience and meet prospective students. So.....if you're thinking of...

Today we first years “celebrated” our last day of class in the first half of the Core......not quite as exciting as the last day of school before summer vacation. We have our Financial Accounting final on Saturday afternoon, Marketing on Sunday afternoon and Econ on Tuesday morning - sounds like an awesome weekend right!???

Unfortunately having finals this weekend means that Everett and I are missing what I’m sure will be an amazing wedding between two great friends up in Boston. Having said that – I am excited for these finals to be done because that means we will officially be finished with the first half of the Core. Important milestones! I keep hearing that the second half continues to pick up even more. Professor Roni Michaely’s Finance class continues to be mentioned with dread by second years and I know that the balancing act of recruiting and schoolwork will continue to be a challenge.

Some updates in Ithaca – the apple fest this weekend in the Commons was pretty awesome. A lot of...

Weeks at Johnson seem to seriously fly by. I can’t believe that next weekend marks the beginning of finals for the first half of the core! Homecoming was a blast (photos below) but its time to get serious for these finals as the first half wraps up.

As I write this post, I am sitting on the Cornell Campus-to-Campus bus on my way back to Ithaca from NYC. I spent today at a conference run by a digital marketing think tank called L2. Today’s  conference focused on utilizing digital and social media marketing in the luxury retail space – something I’m particularly interested in. I learned a lot attending this conference – in particular that mobile and especially tablet marketing are growing exponentially. The other attendees at the conference were marketers from various luxury brands and I feel like I met some great people as we head into the recruiting period for next summer’s internships.

                This past...

Its been quite a whirlwind since the beginning of August. Its pretty amazing how fast everything really kicks in while you are in the Core. Orientation lasted about two weeks and was packed full with information sessions and social events to get better acquainted with classmates. Some highlights were a wine visit to taste some Finger Lakes wine at Wagner Vineyards, a boat trip across Lake Cayuga, an overnight camping trip called “Johnson Outdoor Experience", swimming and cliff jumping at a local watering hole (photo below) and playing golf at the Cornell course. On top of school related stuff I am also working on planning my wedding for next summer at the New York Botanical Garden. My fiance, Everett Peroni, is also a first year at Johnson and we applied to Johnson together.  We are extremely excited to be at Cornell as it means we are FINALLY in the...
