Hi everyone, my name is Emily Hutchins and I am so looking forward to being a Johnson blogger for the class of 2014!  The official orientation starts tomorrow and I’m excited to be able to introduce myself while I still have a moment to catch my breath. Prior to coming to Johnson I lived in NYC for six years since graduating from Lehigh University. At Lehigh, I double majored in History and English but after a summer internship at a publishing company I decided to change my focus and aggressively pursued a job in the financial industry. After graduation, I worked at Goldman Sachs for three years, first trading equity on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and then working in a business development group. For the past three years I was working at a boutique investment bank called PrinceRidge selling mortgage-backed securities to institutional investors.

I decided to apply to business school as I want to shift my career focus to marketing. I am hoping to incorporate the analytic and sales skills I developed in my professional career and expand on my existing knowledge by building a better foundation through pursuit of an MBA. Outside of school and work I enjoy bicycling, being active, live music, hiking, shopping, food and wine.

I spent the last week in Ithaca before the official orientation begins in “Math Camp” or the Quantitative Skills for the Core under Professor Peter Regan. It was a great way to get acclimated to material that the first years will see in the core classes ahead. It was also a fantastic way to meet a ton of fellow students and begin to balance the various social and academic opportunities that face us. Its been a really fun week filled with parties, dinners, athletic pursuits and general exploring of our new home (pictures below). I am so excited for the official orientation to kick off tomorrow to meet the rest of the incoming class.  I’m also looking forward to reporting back on all aspects of my first year at Johnson – from academic challenges to social events, professional recruitment, and thoughts on Cornell and Ithaca. I wanted to blog for Johnson as I myself utilized the blog as I was working on my own application and thought it was a fantastic tool to learn more about the school from a student’s perspective. So, feel free to reach out with questions or comments. Here we go!
