Its been quite a whirlwind since the beginning of August. Its pretty amazing how fast everything really kicks in while you are in the Core. Orientation lasted about two weeks and was packed full with information sessions and social events to get better acquainted with classmates. Some highlights were a wine visit to taste some Finger Lakes wine at Wagner Vineyards, a boat trip across Lake Cayuga, an overnight camping trip called “Johnson Outdoor Experience", swimming and cliff jumping at a local watering hole (photo below) and playing golf at the Cornell course.

On top of school related stuff I am also working on planning my wedding for next summer at the New York Botanical Garden. My fiance, Everett Peroni, is also a first year at Johnson and we applied to Johnson together.  We are extremely excited to be at Cornell as it means we are FINALLY in the same town after living apart for the last 6 years. For now, wedding related stuff is getting pushed till October break (with brief "Say Yes to the Dress" study breaks).

After orientation there was a quick turnaround to our first day of class in the core. This half of the semester we are taking Marketing, Microeconomics and Financial Accounting. It is interesting and hectic being back in school and the Core seriously does not let up. Aside from classwork (which is pretty substantial, we had our first quiz after only three days of class) first years are also put into a Core Team to work on various deliverables throughout the course of the semester.

On top of school work, corporate briefings kicked off in the first week of September. Corporate briefings are opportunities for current students to get introduced to a company they may be interested in interning with in the summer between the two years at school. The company comes and presents about their various business functions and roles within the corporation and there is usually a reception that follows where students have an opportunity to introduce themselves to recruiters from the company and ask questions in a one-on-one setting. It is tough to manage the various things you may be interested in attending while managing your time on school work. For example, I had a long Tuesday that ended late with beers with Colgate-Palmolive at a bar in Collegetown and was up early Wednesday morning to head back to Sage (the building that Johnson is in) for a breakfast at 7 am.

Yesterday, I spent the majority of the day working with my Core Team (Lucky #13) on a case presentation for a marketing case competition we presented earlier today. We were basically in a room together from 9 am – 7:30 pm working on a PowerPoint presentation and perfecting our presentation skills. You learn a lot about people spending that much time together – but fortunately we all get along and presented earlier today and think it went well overall.

While we wait to hear about the finalists from the competition, Cornell is also gearing up for this weekend’s Homecoming. It should be an awesome weekend to be able to unwind a bit after a very hectic week. On the schedule this weekend – both of my sisters visiting from out of town, morning tailgates, a football game against Yale and an Avicii concert tomorrow night (that sold out in 35 minutes!). I’m hoping to use Sunday to get some sleep, watch some football and prepare for the week ahead. Any exciting weekends plans for those out there?
