Cornell Generates Buzz in New Internet Rankings

I just came across this fun news on the Cornell University Facebook page... and, as a blogger, I wanted to do my part to help spread the info 'round the web.

Cornell now ranks #7 in the TrendTopper MediaBuzz Internet analysis rankings recently released by the Global Language Monitor (GLM). According to GLM, the rankings are "...a democratic, self-generating ratings system, since it captures the brand equity associated with each of these fine institutions."

To learn more, view the report and check out the Cornell Facebook page.

Snow Days

It has been thirteen years since I last enjoyed the benefits of a surprise “snow day” while living in Missouri. So, you can imagine my surprise that my next snow day would take place not in a snowy place like Ithaca… but, instead, in a city nicknamed “Hotlanta.”

This week, millions of people across the southeastern United States unexpectedly experienced several snow days, as major storms pounded the region. For my husband Xan and me, it meant several days of telecommuting, which got me wondering about the pros and cons of working from home. My sister, Michelle, has worked remotely for years, and has maintained a high level of productivity. For Xan and me, a couple days at home were relaxing and enabled us to focus on our work. But by day three, cabin fever set in and we were ready to go back to the office.

In a November 2010 study, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee researchers concluded “employees who telecommute the majority of the work week are more satisfied with their jobs compared to those working mostly in the office because working remotely alleviates more stress than it creates.” Still, numerous other articles suggest the pros and cons of telecommuting depend on both business and employee needs and preferences.

So, for those of you in snow-covered cities, have you enjoyed “working-from-home-because-it’s-a-snow-day?” Is telecommuting the best option, or do you prefer working from an office?

(And while you're thinking of your response, here's a pic showing the view from our "home office" during this week's snow days).
Saving Generation Y

As a member of Generation Y -- and a student in the CQEMBA's MacroEcon and Finance classes -- I was fascinated by this article on MSNBC.com about young people and their approach to personal finances. According to the article, Generation Yers' saving habits more closely resemble those of their grandparents than their parents. The article suggests the reason has much to do with the recent economic situation.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/40278081/ns/business-personal_finance/

What do you think? Have the current economic conditions caused you to think differently about saving? Share your two cents here.

Welcome to my Johnson School Blog! My name is Karyn and I’m a member of the Cornell-Queen’s Executive MBA Class of 2012.

Originally from Lake Arrowhead, California, I earned a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri. Currently, I live in Atlanta, Georgia, and work in public affairs for a consumer products company.

So, what can you expect from my blog? I’ll share with you my thoughts on the Cornell-Queen’s Executive MBA program – what we’re learning and what we’re experiencing. I’ll try to bring in my classmates’ perspectives from time to time as well. And while this blog will focus on my academic experience, I may throw in an occasional reference to college sports, pop culture or my husband Xan.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey. If you have suggestions for blog topics, or just want to say hello, feel free to drop me a line at k4cornell@gmail.com
