It dawned on me the other day….the class of 2013 is ¾ done with our first year! It’s amazing how quickly the time has gone by, especially this semester. After finishing the core and the first quarter of business school last December, I thought things would slow down a bit. Well, I was wrong! Second semester is just as crazy. The balance has shifted however. While first semester was heavy on the school work and classes side, second semester has been all about leading clubs and extracurricular events.

Similar to the typical MBA student, I am very involved in thing outside of classes. Last semester, when I made the decision about what clubs and leadership positions I would commit my time to, I didn’t know how rewarding and challenging the experiences would be. It’s been an incredible learning experience to say the least.

To elaborate a bit, I currently am the Co-President of the Human Capital Association, an amazing club dedicated to educating its members on issues involving human...

For most of us, getting an MBA constitutes the last time we’ll be in “school.” Yes, here or there we may take an educational class or seminar through work, but pretty much MBA is it. The last chance you have to dedicate to self-improvement on a full-time basis. While the consensus is that your MBA is a chance to make a career change or catapult your current career, it is also a chance to improve your skill-set and personal brand to not only help you get a job, but be more successful at it. For me, this was the chance to take every class I missed out in undergraduate (“Presentation Skills for Leaders” would actually have been helpful!), and to build on skills I thought I would never need.

Last semester involved a lot of decision making around what immersion I should take. I was recruiting for HR internships (and landed one!), but there was no HR immersion. I toyed back and forth between several choices: Customized (a popular choice for MBA’s choosing less mainstream careers), Semester in Strategic...

As a Cornell undergrad, I experienced first hand what a large, diverse school has to offer university-wide, but I'm still continuously impressed with everything going on at Cornell on a daily basis.

As a first year MBA, with a crazy, hectic schedule, it is so tempting to stay in the confines of Sage Hall, and soak up as much Accounting and Managerial Finance as I possibly can. But, if you look at everything Cornell has to offer, you'll see so much learning that can happen outside of Sage.

First and of course most important, is the phenomenal wine course in the hotel school. The course is structured to give you an overview of wine from regions around the world, with each class covering a different region. Since reading about flavor profiles is not nearly effective as tasting, during each class you also get to taste 5 to 6 wines (out of wine glasses with "Cornell Wine Expert" etched on the side none-the-less!). While personally very informative, the class is also great for anyone going into a profession...

As a dual-degree student at both Johnson and the School of Industrial Labor Relations, I have been lucky to be thrown into recruiting and interviewing right away. While most of my Johnson classmates start interviewing in December and January, I am beginning, well next week. Although it has at several moments, seemed very overwhelming, it is exciting to see possibilities for what lies ahead in the future. So on to the fun stuff. The biggest lessons I have learned about recruiting: Networking is the most important thing you can possibly do. While classes are 100% crucial to your success, so is meeting the right people at the right companies for you. I have spent a good amount of my time here at Johnson reaching out to second-years and alumni at companies I am interested in, and learning about the company through these people's different experiences. There is only so much you can get from a website, so these connections are essential. Take the time early on to think about what you want. I did a lot of soul...

Hello everyone! My name is Lindsay Petrovic and I am so excited to be a Johnson School blogger for the upcoming year. I was born and raised in the Ithaca area, and went to Cornell for my undergraduate degree. I was a Nutritional Sciences major and had originally planned on pursuing a career in academia. Luckily, I quickly decided that academic research was not for me, and I started my professional career as a manager for a large upscale restaurant group. After running five of their restaurants across the country (in Los Angeles, Miami, Orange County, Denver, and Napa Valley), I decided to leave my job to attend business school and to make a career change from hospitality management to human resources. During the business school application process, I began working at a small luxury boutique hotel in the Ithaca area to gain hands-on experience in human resources management before I started school. At Cornell I am pursuing a dual-degree combining the study of business administration at the Johnson School with...
