For working professionals like myself, a wonderful aspect of the CQEMBA program is that it is an 18-month program. However, a lousy aspect about the CQEMBA program is that it an 18-month program. A couple of weeks ago, I was a little jealous of the regular Johnson MBA class of 2014 when I heard that they were on fall break. See @JohnsonMBA14_AE and @JohnsonMBA14_NW on twitter.  Having a week to ten days off seems like only a fantasy or dream right about now. Because, when I am not studying I am balancing the demand of my professional work life. Not easy, but doable.

But it got my thinking. What do you do when you have time off? I guess we need to separate the breaks into two categories. Study breaks and vacations.  For me study breaks are quick short-term breaks that clear my mind of all MBA course work. In my undergraduate days, it was generally hanging with friends for a quick game of DOOM, Quake or another MMORG game before these games were really MMORG. Okay, maybe it was study avoidance rather than breaks, but the intension was still there. Take time out of studying to do something that clears the mind.

Now-a-days, I don't have time to game. When I am not working, I try to spend time with the family. When they are in bed and I need a study break, I turn to an old stand by, Doctor Who. The new season just started. I love DVRs so I can record each episode and play them when I need the break. When I am done with the current episodes, I turn to Netflix to play the current and classics....

Before the CQEMBA I took regular work breaks, okay vacations, to a beach front place in which I have bought some owner interest in the building. It was a place that my family loved and I got to practice my foreign language skills. This is far enough away that I was able to clear my mind (but a direct flight from SFO) and not only refresh my time with family, but also able to get away from the daily grind of work to think more strategically about work.

I am being vague on purpose. I want to have a little contest. Partly for some fun and partly to see if anyone is really reading this blog. Look at the picture in this blog post if you can comment on the right location of my vacation place you will win a small prize. And, no it will not be vacation….. In the event that there are more than one entry I will look at the first person that get the correct answer. Enjoy and good luck.

I'm starting the CQEMBA in June 2013 and have been reading your blog to understand what my experience would look like. I have no idea where your get away is.
