Johnson’s Dean Designate Receives “Light of India Award”

Soumitra Dutta one of 19 Indians living abroad, honored for contributions to India and the world


Soumitra Dutta, dean designate of the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, was honored on June 1, 2012, with a “Light of India Award” at a gala event in New York City. Dutta, who is presently the Roland Berger Chaired Professor of Business and Technology INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France, was selected by a jury of preeminent Indian leaders in economics, business, politics, and the arts, for “Excellence in Education and Academics- Scholars and Professors.” More than 300 attended the award ceremony at the Taj Pierre Hotel.



The Light of India Awards were created by Remit2India and presented by The Amrapali Group to honor the excellence and exemplary achievements of Indians living abroad, and to emphasize the role that this community has played in of its contribution, both to India and to the world.  The awards, now in their second year, recognize and reward excellence and achievement in the fields of corporate; business; science, technology, and medicine; literature and journalism; arts and entertainment; and education and academics.

Dutta was selected by the jury from among five nominees for the Light of India award in academics. His fellow nominees hailed from top business schools, including Harvard University, University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and London Business School.

“I am honored to be chosen from among such a distinguished group of academic colleagues,” said Dutta, who joins Johnson as its 11th dean on July 1, 2012. “It is wonderful to see so many natives of India advancing knowledge, technology, science, and the arts all over the world.”

Others selected by the jury in their respective categories include Bharat Desai Founder of Syntel (business leadership); Anshuman Jain Co-CEO of Deutsche Bank (corporate leadership); Pradeep K. Khosla Dean of the College of Engineering Carnegie Mellon University (technology); and Padma Lakshmi Host of ‘Top Chef’ America (arts and entertainment).

Soumitra Dutta is an authority on the impact of new technology on the business world, especially social media and social networking, and on strategies for driving growth and innovation by embracing the digital economy. He is the co-editor and author respectively of two influential reports in technology and innovation the Global Information Technology Report (co-published with the World Economic Forum) and the Global Innovation Index (to be co-published with the World Intellectual Property Organization). Both reports have been used by several governments around the world in assessing and planning their technology and innovation policies.

His work has been widely published in the Harvard Business Review, European Management Journal, Management Science, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Decision Support Systems, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, and other journals. Dutta and his ideas have been featured in myriad business magazines, newspapers, and blogs, including Global Intelligence for the CIO, Information Week, Brasil, BusinessWorld India, Chief Executive, Finance & Management, Chief Executive Magazine, Forbes, and The McKinsey Quarterly.

Dutta is a member of the Davos Circle, an association of long-time participants in the Annual Davos meeting of the World Economic Forum and has engaged in a number of multi-stakeholder initiatives to shape global, regional and industry agendas. He is on the advisory boards of several international business schools. He has co-founded two firms and is on the board of several startups. He received the European Case of the Year from the European Case Clearing House in 2002, 2000, 1998, and 1997.
