Dean Dutta tells Class of 2016: You made the right choice
Deans and student leaders welcome incoming MBA students to Johnson at Cornell University
Dean Soumitra Dutta welcomed 287 new students in the Two-Year MBA in Ithaca, class of 2016, on Sunday, August 3, 2014. Dutta talked about why Cornell, Johnson, and Ithaca each make their choice in coming to Johnson the right one. On the many changing seasons in Ithaca, Dutta said, “go out there and enjoy what nature has to offer.”
He also spoke about how class members need to be open and flexible to exploring themselves and each other. “Learning happens at moments of friction; friction between your views and views of others. Be open to friction.” Along the learning theme, Dutta also told the class that “learning about yourself is probably one the most important elements in becoming a leader.”
Vishal Gaur, associate dean for MBA programs, was also on hand to welcome the class, both as dean and as a member of the faculty. Gaur stated that there were 34 countries represented in the class, and 6.6 percent come from a military background. These numbers add to the rich diversity that makes up the Johnson community.
Safiya Miller, MBA ’15, interrupted her summer internship at Google to come back to welcome the class, as well. In her remarks, Miller encouraged the class to build relationships and be resilient during their time at Johnson.
Class members will continue their orientation program over the next two weeks, with career management programs where they will hear from and meet alumni from different career functions and industries. They are also completing their first core course, the Johnson Team Leadership Experience, the first element of the new curriculum being launched with this class. The Team Leadership Experience will conclude with the long-standing tradition, Johnson Outdoor Experience (J.O.E.), featuring team-building exercises and ropes course activities at Camp Casowasco in Moravia, New York.
