Triplepundit.com tracks summer internship work of Environmental Defense Fund Climate Corps fellow, Jacob Shirmer, MBA '12

This summer, TriplePundit.com is following Johnson's Jacob Shirmer, MBA '12, as one of three environmental change agents participating in the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) Climate Corps program.  The program places trained MBA students as fellows at leading companies to develop actionable energy efficiency plans.

As an EDF Climate Corps fellow, Shirmer has held an internship at SunGard, one of the world's leading software and IT services companies with over $5 billion in revenue. His projects have consisted of identifying strategic revenue generation opportunities and designing an employee engagement campaign focused on energy efficiency.

"As I near the end of my internship I realize just how much my experiences at Johnson, including great classes such as the Sustainable Global Enterprise (SGE) Immersion, have prepared me for making the business case for sustainability in a large corporation," said Shirmer. "It's been a fantastic summer, and I have no doubt that the experiences and connections gained through this fellowship will provide substantial steps forward in my career working at the nexus of business and sustainability."

The EDF Climate Corps program has expanded to 57 fellows this year, and two are Johnson students. Hayley Jean Farr, MBA '12, is also a fellow at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and a student in Johnson's SGE Immersion.  An ideal match for Johnson students, these unique fellowships represent how the school's Performance Learning model supports students inside and outside the classroom.

Over the past three years since the EDF Climate Corps program inception, its fellows have made recommendations that will help host companies to:

- Save $439 million in net operational costs over project lifetimes
- Cut the equivalent of 958 million kilowatt hours of energy use annually (enough to power 85,000 homes per year)
- Avoid over 557,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually (equivalent to taking more than 86,000 SUVs off the road per year).
