John Neuman has been a management consultant for over 36 years. Currently he heads the 1492 Consulting Group, a 9-year old international management consulting firm with headquarters in Ithaca, NY and is teaching at Johnson as a visiting senior lecturer. Included in his consulting career is 14 years with McKinsey & Co. where he was a partner. In addition, Neuman has held senior consulting positions in such firms as: Coopers & Lybrand, IBM, and ATKearney. Among his consulting areas of expertise are: strategy formulation, revenue acceleration, complex alliances and mergers, e-business strategies, marketing strategies, market research, manufacturing/supply chain optimizations, re-organizations, procurement profit improvement, change management, new product development, and post-merger integrations.
Neuman's over 150 primary clients have spanned a broad array of industries and institutions: consumer goods, retail, utilities, basic manufacturing, health care, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, financial, defense/aerospace, government, high technology, professional services, new ventures, and not-for-profits. In addition to management consulting, Neuman has over nine years of additional managerial experience: as the CEO of eCornell (the professional development, distant learning subsidiary of Cornell University), the executive director of the law firm Dewey Ballantine, a managing director Corporate Finance at Dean Witter, and chairman of the board of a leading, downstate medical center. Currently, he is on the boards of the Cayuga Medical Center, the Sciencenter in Ithaca, and the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce (heading the Government Affairs Committee). At Cornell, he serves on the Cornell University Council, the board of the Cornell Rowing Association, and the Technology Transfer Committee. Formerly, Neuman served on the Advisory Council of the Entrepreneurship and Personal Enterprise Program and chaired the Entrepreneur of the Year Committee.
Neuman has authored over three dozen articles and book chapters on management issues in such journals as Harvard Business Review, Journal of Business Strategy, Marketing News (expert columnist), Supply Chain Management, An International Journal, and Management Review. For over 30 years, Neuman has been a frequent speaker at industry forums and symposiums, and has been a guest lecturer at Harvard Business School, Wharton Grad, Darden at University of Virginia, Columbia University, NYU Stern School, and various colleges at Cornell University. Neuman holds a BEE and a MEng in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and an MBA from Wharton Grad at the University of Pennsylvania with a concentration in industrial management and management science/operations research.
