It is wonderful to be back in Sage Hall from maternity leave and thank you all for your well wishes.  My little one is growing very fast and we are enjoying all the little things – these truly are the “big things” in life.

We are ready to announce Johnson's 2013 application essay questions!  We changed the direction of our questions this year to better understand your career choices and of course, who you are.  We enjoy reading about your own introspections and look forward to getting to know you.

Drumroll please....

The questions are divided into three parts:

Part I:  Career Choice Essay (300 word maximum)
How would you characterize your career since college?
This is not your job description or complete history of your work since graduating (we already ask for that in the online portion and can see this on your resume).  You need to choose the most important elements that show your initiative, contribution, leadership and results achieved.

Part II:  Career Goal Essay (400 word maximum)
Tell us about your short and long term career goals.
Please show you have a clear direction for your goal post-MBA.  Good essays will emphasize what an applicant wants to do while at Johnson and how you will use this experience to accomplish your goal.

Part III:  Character Essay (400 word maximum for chosen question), please choose one of the following to write about:
a. You are the author for the book of Your Life Story.  Please write the table of contents for the book.  Note: Approach this essay with your unique style.  We value creativity and authenticity.

b. Describe a situation taken from your personal or professional life where you failed and tell us what you learned.

c. What does diversity mean to you and how will you contribute to the diversity of our community at Johnson?

When you have contemplated and written these, the rest of the application is straightforward: online application asking you bio, education and employment information.  We will continue to ask for two professional letters of reference and accept the GMAT or GRE for your test score.  An applicant whose primary language is not English, please send a TOEFL, IELTS, or Pearson Test of English (PTE).

The 2012-2013 application will go live at the beginning of July.  The admissions committee will start reading applications as soon as they are submitted.  Typically, we see applications start to come in closer to the deadline date so, for those of you who like to wait to submit, here is when you can plan to do so:

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Glad to hear that the essay topic has been launched~~ A little nervous and a little exciting!! Well, I'd like to ask Johnson: In part II, if I've just decided an industry which I would like to stay but not decided the position, is it ok to answer the question?

For the following
"You are the author for the book of Your Life Story. Please write the table of contents for the book. Note: Approach this essay with your unique style. We value creativity and authenticity."

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_contents

This is confusing. What you people are expecting in this essay? Please elaborate.

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

hi- what about those of us who are applying straight from college? how would the response to "How would you characterize your career since college?" differ? Are we allowed to describe our internship experiences instead?

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Hi Christina,

If applications are submitted well before the deadline is it possible to receive your admissions decision prior to the December 19th notification date? Or are all decisions released at the same time? Thanks for the help!

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Hi! I am planning to take the Toefl on November 16th, and I want to apply by R2, but I´m not sure if the scores will be ready by the deadline´s date (November 28th). Is this a problem? or there is some flexibilty?

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Welcome back, Christine! It is always amazing hearing about a new sweet little one and I am congratulating you sincerely! Thanks for revealing all of the topics for teh creative essays on here, as I was really not familiar with what can possible be, as this is my first time writing anything like that, simply because in Europe, where I am from originally, the system is different, but am really appreciating the detailed info!

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Yuexin: it is OK to not know exactly what you want to do since b-school offers a variety of opportunities to do some career exploration; however, you do need to have a focus, short-term and long-term, that will help guide you through the many resources and opportunities students have at Johnson. Some students do feel at a disadvantage when they have not really thought about what it is that they are good at and what you are passionate about - even further, how do you know this is something you want to do and committed to doing.

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Brayn: thanks for asking this question. This essay (TOC) is asking that you give us a short sample of the chapter headings if'/when you write your life story. You can start and end wherever you wish; you can include 1-5 sentences in each chapter heading; or you can add quotes, some applicants have been inspired by song titles; anything that helps the admissions committee understand what is important to you about your life that you would write about in a book. I hope this helps.

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@linh: if you are coming straight out of college, you would need to include "career" under the umbrella of college work, internships, and any other type of "experience" you would include on your resume as well as contribute to your MBA experience.

By Christine Sneva on   8/6/2012 9:09 PM

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Greg T.: I would like to say you would get a decision before December 19th, but cannot guarantee it this year. We are still formalizing our process and do not want to make any promises we cannot honor. So, we will stay firm with our notification dates. Great question! Best, Christine

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Sofia: work with your application manager (see previous blog post on regional breakdown of this) and they will let you know how to handle this. Typically, we are flexible about this, but do need to see an official copy before we are ready to make a final decision on your file. Best, Christine

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Hey Christine, I have my GMAT on 10th September, and the R1 deadline is OCT 17. I have not started with my essays yet. Should I speed up and somehow finish by R1 deadline or take time and submit my R2? What I basically want to know how much will I lose if I apply in R2 instead of R1?

Thanks

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Thanks for all this tips. I am sure, we can use this for future purposes.

By <a href="http://www.essaywriter.co.uk/essa on   10/4/2012 8:58 PM

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Ankur: You should submit when you feel it is ready - there is no need to rush to be in round 1 and it is not worth rushing if you believe you have a better presentation by waiting until round 2.

Re: Filling up the online application

Hi Christine, I started my online application in end Oct and I chose the application R2, thinking I should have sufficient time to complete the whole application process. However, I feel really rushed to meet the R2 deadline right now and would like to change it from R2 to R3, so that I could have a better overall presentation.
Could you advise whether I can still do the switch half-way during my online application? It seems I can't reset the application round after choosing "R2" in the system...Any advice on this?

Thanks for the help!

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Hey Christie, Can international applicants apply in round 3?

By Gaurav on   1/7/2013 9:58 PM

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Gaurav - yes, international applicants can apply round 3. I understand round 3 can seem "late" for some but we evaluate the strength in applications in each round and if you have been able to submit a strong application, I would rather you feel confident about this rather than worrying about R2 v. R3. I hope this helps!

By Christine Sneva on   1/7/2013 10:08 PM

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

@Alice Yang - if you would prefer to switch to R3, please contact your application manager. See comments above regarding R2 v. R3. Best - Christine

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

In Essay Q1, i am somewhat confused about what elments should career changers focus on. For example, I am from high-tech but i gained lots of leadership expereince in education sector (non-profit) and that is my post-mba goal. So, should i focus achievements that i made in high-tech or non-profit.

Re: Johnson 2013 Application Essay Questions and Deadlines

Hi Christine

Thanks for having this blog, it is extremely helpful. I am applying in Round 3, but my immediate supervisor, who is also my recommender will not be able to submit the recommendation letter by Jan 30. He is out of country because of unavoidable personal reasons. Can he submit the letter after the deadline ?

I also read another blog about a possibility of Round 3 deadline being postponed due to problems with the paper reader. Do you more information on that ?

Thanks
Aneesh
