Performance Learning
At the Johnson School, we aim not just to provide theory and applied learning opportunities for our students, but to integrate these through what we call "performance learning." Our approach demands that students apply theoretical frameworks to real business situations in which they are responsible for delivering results. Throughout, they receive close guidance from a variety of experts including faculty, alumni, and business mentors.
In the finance arena, we have structured a number of robust performance-learning experiences. These include:
- Three career-specific immersions for Two-Year MBAs and a practicum for AMBAs, which combine coursework with applied-learning experiences. Some incorporate student treks to Wall Street, top investment firms, as well as live-case experiences with industry leaders.
- These deliver exceptional preparation for the ultimate performance-learning experience: internships in financial institutions, consulting firms, and financial functions of large corporations.
- Passport programs (for students in our Ithaca-based MBA programs) in capital markets, investment banking, investment research, managerial finance, and consulting prepare students for financial careers through a carefully planned and structured series of lectures, presentations, case interview preparation events, and mock interviews.
- Through our $14mm Cayuga MBA Fund—one of the largest student-managed university hedge funds—select Two-Year and Accelerated MBA Portfolio Managers undertake the research and pitch the results of their analysis to their sector teammates and faculty overseers to make long, short, and sell decisions.
- Johnson School students initiated and the school continues to sponsor a Stock Pitch Competition for student teams from peer schools to research and pitch stock picks in a time-constrained competition before high-profile financial industry judges.
- The Johnson School's numerous active, student-managed clubs provide excellent performance-learning opportunities. Of special interest to those pursuing careers in finance are the Johnson School Investment Management Club, Old Ezra Finance Club, Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital Club and more.
