Immersion Learning
Managerial Finance
The Managerial Finance Immersion (MFI) is intended for students interested in finance within a corporation, typically referred to as the "CFO's world." It provides participants with the tools they need to become a corporate finance professional, with emphasis on the "corporate" perspective. With recent emphasis on financial metrics as a critical tool in corporate decision-making, the MFI is also a useful program for students interested in general management positions. Many students interested in consulting also find MFI appropriate preparation for their career goals.
The Program combines a regimen of courses, sequenced to provide the requisite skills for obtaining and excelling in relevant summer internships. In addition to the MLO and Operations core courses, the immersion includes:
- Corporate Financial Policy (Jan. intensive)
- Financial Statement Analysis (1st half)
- Valuations (2nd half)
- Cost Accounting (full term)
- Corporate Governance (1st half)
- Practicum (primarily second half, with some first half sessions too)
The Practicum Course, which meets once a week for a 3 hour session (primarily in the second half of the semester), serves as the "binding fiber" for the immersion curriculum. Through a series of case analyses, typically presented by senior corporate finance practitioners, students are exposed to the current issues that "keep CFO's awake at night." Typical topics include:
- Raising capital; debt and equity; public and private
- Strategic acquisitions/divestitures/joint ventures
- Risk management; Capital Structure strategy
- Restructuring and reorganization
Several sessions early in the semester focus on heightening student awareness of current trends as well as capital markets-based "tools of the trade"; in essence, a logical extension of the Corporate Finance Passport Program. These sessions also serve as a primer for the corporate finance interview process.
Students have a high level of interaction with the people who "lived the case," whereby they can challenge management's decisions, gaining insight to the realities (and often idiosyncrasies) of the financial decision-making process.
