Robert D. Redmond, MBA '80
Vice Chairman, Barclays Capital Chairman of Financial Sponsors Investment Banking Group Head, Principal Investment Origination
Robert Redmond is a Vice Chairman at Barclays Capital, Chairman of the Financial Sponsors coverage group, and runs the Principal Opportunities Group within the Investment Banking Division. He is also a member of the Business Development Committee.
Upon joining the Firm (former Lehman Brothers) in 1994 and as part of his responsibility to rebuild the High Yield origination effort, Mr. Redmond led the development of a leveraged lending practice and an acquisition finance business that today ranks among the industry's leading such franchises. In 1997, he took on the additional responsibility of building a banking coverage practice focused on LBO firms and Private Equity transaction sponsors.
In the ten years that he had day-to-day management responsibility for the Sponsor business, Rob had direct involvement in growing the coverage footprint from eight accounts, initially, to over 120 active relationships across large and mid-cap firms. During this time he also oversaw significant geographic expansion to include opening and staffing offices in London, Hong Kong and Tokyo. He continues to maintain many of these same global relationships at the founding partner or managing principal level.
In 2003, Mr. Redmond was asked to lead a turnaround of the Firm's Industrial Group, which included responsibility for the Aerospace and Defense, Capital Goods, Transportation and Paper and Forest Products businesses. Under his leadership, the Industrial coverage effort became one of the largest revenue producing businesses in the Division. At the end of that year, Rob was named to the Management Committee for the Firm as a whole.
In addition to serving as Chairman of the Financial Sponsors Group, Mr. Redmond has served on the High Yield Bond and Loan New Business Committee, which evaluates and reviews all forms of deal and credit risk related to leveraged transactions on behalf of the firm. He was also one of four Managing Principals of the Lehman Brothers Co-Investment Partners L.P., a $1.6B fund which served as the firm's primary vehicle for investing alongside its leading Corporate and Financial Sponsor clients.
Prior to joining Lehman Brothers in 1994, Mr. Redmond was a Managing Director with Kidder, Peabody & Co. where he was head of Leveraged Finance and High Yield Capital Markets, as well as a member of that firm's Underwriting and Commitment Committees. Mr. Redmond joined Kidder, Peabody as a Vice President in their Capital Markets Division in 1987. He began his career in 1980 as an officer of the Chase Manhattan Bank managing the bank's relationships with diversified companies.
Mr. Redmond holds a B.A. degree in Economics from Lafayette College and received his M.B.A. degree from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. He currently serves as a member of The Cornell University Council and as a member of The Johnson Graduate School of Management Advisory Board.
