Message from the acting director:
Gearing up for fall events
Autumn usually invokes memories of a changing landscape, as leaves turn to vibrant shades of red and gold. The landscape of the Johnson School "Alumni" web site currently is going through some changes, too, as we try to make this resource easier for you to access and to enable you to update your personal information. We appreciate your patience as we work through this process, and I welcome any constructive suggestions that you have to offer.
Among the upcoming fall events for alumni is Cornell Homecoming, which will be held on October 14-16. In addition to a Cornell-Georgetown football game, a Frozen Assets hockey match, and other events on Saturday, October 15, we will be dedicating a classroom in Sage Hall in honor of Professor Seymour (Sy) Smidt, who recently retired after a 49-year teaching career. Even though June 2006 seems a long way off, I want to remind those of you who are in classes that end in a "1" or "6," that we already are planning for the big Reunion Weekend, June 8-11, 2006. So, mark your calendars now and watch for details in the coming months.
In closing, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to those of you who sent in your thoughtful messages of encouragement in response to the Dean Swieringa's message regarding the school's accepting students from Tulane University. Cornell University has accepted a total of 140 Tulane students, and the Johnson School has enrolled seven of these students this semester. We wish them well as they settle into the busy academic routine. In addition, our students have spearheaded fund-raising efforts and collected more than $5,000, which will be turned over to the American Red Cross Hurricane Relief Campaign. Students, faculty and staff also donated five SUV-size loads of clothing, which will be distributed and shipped to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Please check the Katrina Disaster Response web site for information on how alumni can lend support.
I also want to express my appreciation to those of you who sent greetings and good wishes to me personally. It will be a busy and exciting year for the Alumni Relations team, and I look forward to seeing many of my good friends and making new acquaintances in the months ahead.
Kind regards,
Cyndy Tkachuck '93, acting director
