General CJOnline Questions
What is CJOnline?
CJOnline is the Career Management Center's interactive source for recruiting. Students use it for multiple purposes:
- Corporate Briefing information and sign-ups
- On-campus recruitment application, invitations, and interview scheduling
- Off-campus job postings for individual application or for a resume upload
- Job Offer data collection for the CMC's records
- Information on Companies and Contacts
How do I learn the most current information about a recruiting event or briefing?
CJOnline is always the most accurate source up until the day of the interview. You should always check in the CMC on the day of the interview for delays, room changes and interviewer information.
How do I access CJOnline??
CJOnline is located at https://career.johnson.cornell.edu/career-student/
Your net id is your log-in and your password is your Outlook password
How can I learn how to use CJOnline?
A brief training session on how to use CJOnline for Corporate Briefing information will be held during the September 3rd CMC Career Programming. A session for how to use CJOnline for on-campus recruiting will be held later in the semester before your first on-campus visit resume upload. In addition, a User's Manual is available in the CMC and it can be sent to you electronically by request.
How do I record a job offer?
Go to CJOnline
- On the left bar, click on "Add job offer" under the grey tab labeled "Job Offers"
- If your job offer resulted from on-campus recruiting or a job posting, click "Edit job offer" next to the job title under "Select Job Opportunity"
- Complete all the fields on the "Edit job offer" screen

- If you are done with CJOnline click "Logout" on the left bar
- If your job offer resulted from your off-campus job search or from your summer internship, click "Add Job Offer with no Assoc Job Opp"
- Complete all the fields on the "Edit job offer" screen
- Click "Add job offer" at the bottom of the screen
- If you are finished in CJOnline click "Logout" on the left bar
Why is there an Add Job Offer link to a job for which I submitted a resume?
The Add Job Offer link does not mean you have received an offer; if you do receive an offer for that job you should enter it into CJOnline through that link. The link appears to ensure that your offer is matched to the correct employer information. CJOnline will never notify you of a job offer.
On-Campus Recruiting Questions
How do I learn what companies are coming to campus for a corporate briefing?
In CJOnline go to Search for Events under Corporate Events and select Corporate Briefings from the drop down menu. The Briefing details will be listed. We also suggest you sign up for the briefing if interested so that the employer knows how many students to expect so the companies know what to arrange for catering. You can remove your name up until 3:00 p.m. the day of the briefing.
How do I learn what companies are coming for on-campus interviews?
In CJOnline go to Search Job Opportunities and select the button for Only Interviews. Details change frequently so you should check this regularly.
How do I get an on-campus interview through CJOnline?
There are multiple steps involved in on-campus recruiting and you should either attend the training session or pick up the User's Guide if you plan to participate in on-campus recruiting. The steps are briefly outlined here:
- Submit a resume by the required deadline for the job in which you are interested (Cover letters are either required or highly recommended)
- The employer will select the candidates they wish to see and send an invitation to you. You will be notified in CJOnline and through an email.
- Accept or decline the invitation by the deadline
- The CJOnline system will schedule a time for you based on available times and the schedule you submitted in the CJOnline system. For best results keep this schedule up-to-date. CJOnline will always schedule you, even if it conflicts with your schedule.
- Accept your interview slot! You may also decline it, or try to swap it with someone else through CJOnline. But you need to confirm your timeslot by the deadline.
How do I know the deadlines for these steps?
The deadlines are listed in CJOnline. A recruiting calendar with the schedule deadlines is also available in the CMC. In general the deadlines are based on the week in which the interview takes place. However, when employers schedule late, or there are last minute issues, these dates can change.
Why did my on-campus visit disappear from CJOnline?
Interview information will disappear from your view in CJOnline on the Friday of your Accept Invitation Deadline from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. while interviews are being scheduled.
I missed the resume drop deadline, what do I do?
Resumes are sent automatically by the system at 12:00 a.m. If you miss the deadline or are unable to upload before the deadline please email the contact name for that job description explaining what happened and attach your resume. The CMC will not be able to send it for you after the deadline has passed.
I have found someone to switch interview timeslots with me, but the deadline has passed, how do I swap?
Once the Swap Deadline has passed you will not be able to swap interview timeslots with someone in CJOnline. If you need to make a swap after the deadline please email the CMC and CC the person on the schedule who has agreed to swap times with you. The CMC will make the changes manually and let you know when you can view the new timeslots in CJOnline.
Off-Campus Recruiting Questions
I want to conduct an off-campus job search. Can I use CJOnline for this?
CJOnline is an excellent resource for your off-campus job search. Many jobs are posted by employers who can't come to campus to interview but who want to include Johnson candidates. Some employers request that you contact them by email or through a web site. Other employers will ask us to collect resumes and the job listing will indicate that you need to "Submit Resume" by a certain date. Last year (2007-2008) we had over 800 jobs posted by off-campus employers. In addition, the Networking section in CJOnline provides contact information for over 5000 contacts in over 1800 companies. If you are interested in a company you can start at CJOnline to see if we have ever worked with the company in prior years.
I'd like to research alumni and companies for my off-campus search. How do I access JAC (the Johnson Alumni Connection)?
You can search alumni at Johnson Alumni Connection. Log in using your net ID for your username and your seven digit Cornell student ID number as your password. You may change your password after you log in.
Recruiting Contact Questions
How do I use the contact information in CJOnline?
Understanding how our contacts are entered will help you plan your networking. CJOnline will indicate the contact "Type" and the type of contact indicates the degree of participation in campus recruiting.
- "Business card" means that the contact was here for one occasion, most likely a briefing. An "Interviewer" has interviewed.
- The "Type" will also indicate the year in which this took place. Some contacts have multiple types listed and this indicates they are actively involved in recruiting at the Johnson School.
- If a type is a "Business Card 04-05" they might be less likely to be involved.
- There are two listings for "Class of." JS indicates they are Johnson School alumni and CU indicates they are Cornell alumni (but not Johnson School). If this section is blank they are not alumni.
How do I find out what recruiter is coming for a briefing/interview?
We will not know the names of the recruiters coming on campus until they arrive. The morning of your interview please check at the front desk, we will attach your interviewer's business card to your schedule. Briefings we will not know until they arrive.
I talked to a recruiter yesterday who was here for a briefing/interview, how can I find their contact information if I forgot their name?
When recruiters come on campus the CMC does their best to get business cards from them. We update that information in CJOnline. Under contacts you can search by the different headers, which include Last Name, Company Name, and Last Updated. If you search by the 'Last Updated' column you will have a better chance of identifying the person you spoke with.
About MBAFocus Resume Database
What is the difference between my resume in CJOnline and my resume in MBAFocus?
MBAFocus is the official resume database for Johnson School students and is marketed and sold to many employers who do not recruit at the Johnson School in addition to employers who do recruit here. Employers use this vehicle to review all resumes for a given class. MBAFocus resumes are required to follow a specific Johnson format and the resumes are published for MBA II's on September 1 and for MBA I's on November 1 for those employers who have pre-ordered the database. You may change your resume later in the year and the new resume will be available to employers who purchase the database after the original availability date.
CJOnline resumes are submitted to individual employers to apply for an on-campus interview. You may use your MBAFocus resume or you may use a different resume. You may upload four resumes in CJOnline. You must upload at least one resume on CJOnline to apply for "Invite Only" on-campus interviews.
How do I access MBAFocus?
In CJOnline at the bottom of the left hand side follow the link to Other Resources. You can access MBAFocus from there. You may also link directly:
- MBAII: https://gts.mbafocus.com/Cornell/Candidates/Login.aspx?pid=71
- MBAI https://gtscandidate.mbafocus.com/Cornell/Candidates/Login.aspx?pid=73
How do I know which employers might be reviewing my resume through MBA Focus?
Employers either purchase the resume database from selected schools (i.e. Johnson School only) or purchase the Global Focus option and can review resumes from the top twenty business schools. In the latter case the employers search for candidates from among all these schools by the preference, experience and other categories on the profile. For this reason you should take the time to complete the profile as thoroughly as possible.
As of September 2, 2008 the following employers have access to the Johnson School resumes:

Can I research Johnson School resumes to learn more about the background of recent alumni or to see examples of good resumes??
You may want to review resumes from prior Johnson students when they were applying for full-time jobs. We have arranged to have the two previous fulltime resume databases made available for your access:
- 2nd year 2008: http://www.mbafocus.com/search/signin.asp?product=10574
- 2nd Year 2007: http://www.mbafocus.com/search/signin.asp?product=8383
Username: Dove
Password: Dean
- 2nd Year 2009: https://gtsemployer.mbafocus.com/Cornell/Employers/Login.aspx?subid=2855
- 1st Year 2010: https://gtsemployer.mbafocus.com/Cornell/Employers/Login.aspx?subid=10429
Username: CornellOne
Password: CornellOne
When you access these resumes you may have to refine the search criteria and/or change the radio button to Select All. This link is giving you the same access an employer would have and should help you see why completing the Detailed Profile carefully will enhance your candidacy with employers.
International Students:
How difficult is it, REALLY, to land a job and/or internship in the U.S.??
The answer depends on many different variables: your prior work experience, whether you are looking to switch function and/or industry, the strength of your networking skills and your target industry. From year to year approximately 60-75% of our international students end up with jobs in the U.S. That statistic does not take into consideration students' geographic target; the overall stat uses the TOTAL number of international students as the denominator. My best advice is the following:
- Focus on knowing what it is you want to do and develop a solid argument for convincing any employer that you are the BEST qualified candidate.
- Be prepared to spend significant time each week on the job search. In the fall semester, this means a minimum of five hours per week.
- Become knowledgeable on the U.S. Visa process; you'll want to be able to educate uninformed company and HR representatives and counter any misinformation you come across.
- Stay positive and view your international status as an ADVANTAGE, not a disadvantage!
What is my best plan of action and/or how can the CMC BEST assist me in achieving my career goals?
This is EASY to answer and I draw my answers upon the behaviors and strategies that past SUCCESSFUL international students have employed:
- Attend ALL the CMC sponsored programs for International students! This is A MUST! Attend CMC career programming for the class at large.
- Become familiar with the tools and resources available for international students:
- WetFeet Insider Guide – The International MBA Student's Guide to the U.S. Job Search
- International Student Resources in CJOnline:
- Schedule an appointment with and meet regularly with me: lds9@cornell.edu
- Find a Second Year 'buddy' who will read your resume and cover letters, give you encouragement when the going gets tough and support and advise you in general.
When I look through CJOnline, I notice that many companies indicate that US Work Authorization is required. Does this mean I can only apply to companies that are listed as "No Restrictions"?
No, you may apply to any company regardless of the Work Eligibility. There is a list of companies that does ask us to pre-screen resumes prior to submission and we will share this list with you at the beginning of the year as it changes from year-to-year. What we've learned over time is that companies want to hire the BEST QUALIFIED candidate and will often make exception to 'policy'.
Where can I get more information on summer work authorization (Curricular Practical Training) and post-MBA work authorization (Optional Practical Training)?
Your best starting point in all issues related to visa, work authorization, being a student in the U.S. and staying in status, etc. is the ISSO. Don't depend on the opinions or 'knowledge' of your classmates. With these VERY IMPORTANT issues – ALWAYS go to the experts. Immigration Law and Regulations change all the time. http://www.isso.cornell.edu/
