Off-Campus Job Search

The following resources will be helpful to you as you strategize your job search:

1) Complete all of the exercises in the Career Workbook "Getting Down to Business", focus on the Positioning Yourself, Networking and Executing Your Job Search chapters (pages 11-37). You can't find a job until you can clarify your career goal.

2) Make an appointment with a reference librarian to discuss your target industry, job function and list of companies. The librarian can guide you to efficiently research prospective employers and to prepare for information interviews. You can use this handy online form.

3) Use some of the Johnson School databases, and search according to the area of your functional job preference: CJ Online (job listings and employer contacts), Johnson Alumni Connection, Cornell Alumni Directory. You should also take advantage of the excellent databases available through the library: Career Search, BigDough, Bloomberg, Capital IQ, Uniworld.

4) Get connected with thousands of others who can offer job leads by joining LinkedIn, FaceBook, Ryse and other social networking tools. There are Cornell groups in many of these sites.

5) Use search engines such as Indeed.com and Monster.com, to uncover job opportunities. There are also lists specific to certain industries such as Finance Ladder and Marketing Ladder. But, don't depend on these listings. Most jobs are found through referrals that occur as a result of strategic networking.

6) Additional Career Management Center Resources for the off-campus job search, including Just About Jobs, conference calls with international alumni, and a list of firms that we have reached out to are listed below.

Just About Jobs

Each spring, since 2003, the CMC has organized unique recruiting opportunities after standard on-campus recruiting period has ended. These events, called "Just About Jobs," have changed each year based on the job market and student interest. We have flown employers to Ithaca from New York, Boston, Chicago and San Francisco. We have used Sightspeed web-based video conferencing. During the past two years we have conducted "A Day in the Bay" for West Coast employers in San Francisco and "A Day in the Back Bay" in Boston for New England employers.

Just About Jobs 2009 will be designed to leverage our student and employer interests. We will be surveying students and employers to determine whether to keep the Boston or San Francisco events and whether to add a New York City event. This website will provide up-to-date information all year.

You can take advantage of prior Just About Jobs by reviewing the contact information for these events in the CMC. Several hundred employers were contacted for these events over the past five years. While an employer might not have participated, the contact information might provide you with helpful information for your off-campus job search.

International Networking with Johnson School alumni

The CMC will be arranging for a series of six conference calls with alumni in key international locations. Several alumni will participate from an overseas location and students will join a CMC staff moderator in a conference room here in Sage. The prospective region and months for the calls are listed below. Specific dates, times and locations will be announced later.

Trip Reports

The CMC conducts outreach visits to selected employers each year and summarizes their findings into trip reports that are available for Johnson School students and staff. They provide useful background information as you research companies for your job search and are available as Word documents or hard copy through the CMC resource shelves. There are over 180 trip reports available. To view the entire list or to request an electronic copy of a report, please contact the CMC.
