Web Guidelines

The Johnson School will provide server space to host web pages for student clubs officially recognized by the school. Server space is free of charge, but each club must create and maintain its own web pages. The Johnson Web Team cannot provide training, so it is important to either choose a person(s) with basic web editing skills or refer to WebSmart Resources for other alternatives.

Steps for Creating a Johnson School Club Website

  1. Officially register your club.
  2. Initiate or update an FTP account.
  3. Obtain a means for creating and updating HTML files.
  4. Build your own web site.
  5. Notify Student Activities.

1. Officially Register your Club

  • If your club is not officially recognized by the Johnson School, you must first contact studentactivities@johnson.cornell.edu. If your club is already recognized, proceed to step 2 to establish or get access to an FTP account.

2. Initiate or Update an FTP Account (the account that enables you to move files to the server)

  • Establish an FTP account. FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a program that enables you to transfer files to/from the server. To establish or update a server account, contact the Johnson Web Team via e-mail at Web Master. Specify your club's name, and the names and e-mail address of the person(s) who will manage your club web page.
  • A Johnson Web Team member will arrange an appointment with you to sign an FTP Account Form and receive your password and username in person. We do not send passwords via e-mail and encourage you to avoid such practice. Passwords should only be shared with club members cleared to update the web site.
  • FTP functionality is provided in Bear Access. (Open Bear Access and click on FTP.) See the tools section for information about using FTP.

3. Obtain a means for creating/updating HTML pages.

Web pages use the HyperText Markup Language (HTML) to control formatting like font type, size and color, indentations, table layouts, image properties, links to other pages and so on. These markups are not intuitive so it is advisable to use an authoring tool to simplify the task.
