Student Loan Application Process for US Citizens and Permanent Residents only, academic year 2008-09:

  1. Complete the 2008-09 Renewal Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) soon after January 1, 2008. If you have not previously competed a FAFSA - you will complete a new form. Apply online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov
  2. Provide our office with a signed copy of your 2007 Federal Tax Return. [1040/A/EZ along with any schedules A-D filed] We must receive this document before we'll process your Student Aid Report (SAR).
  3. Once you receive your SAR; review to make sure the information is correct. If the information on your SAR is incorrect, please submit your correction(s) at the FAFSA website and notify our office a correction has been submitted.

Deadline dates: To ensure that your aid will be processed prior to the FALL 2008 tuition bill:

  • Complete your FAFSA by March 31 - if you file an extension please complete the FAFSA using estimated amounts -- do not wait.
  • Submit to the Financial Aid Office a signed copy of your 2007 federal tax return or extension by March 31 - your financial aid award will not be processed until we receive this document.

After we have reviewed your SAR and tax return; we will send you your student loan renewal notification. This letter outlines the educational budget, the federal and institutional loans you qualify for, and any recommended Grad PLUS or private educational loan amount. Please remember Grad PLUS and private educational loan programs require a separate application.

All financial aid sources will be applied first to your university tuition bill. If any of these funds result in a credit balance to your account, the credit will be refunded to you after university registration. If you have not already done so, you can sign up for direct deposit, which will speed up the refund process. Access the online Direct Deposit Form.

Outside Scholarships: Scholarships from outside the school are available from many sources. There is some effort involved in securing outside funds. The key is to apply early. You can search for scholarships for free on the web (www.fastweb.com and www.google.com). Many scholarship applications have early deadline dates so do not wait. Begin your search now!! Be aware, there are scholarship scams: warning signs; a fee, money-back guarantee or requests for your credit card or bank account information. Link to our Outside Scholarship site for more.

Scholarships from the Johnson School: Students who enroll without scholarship funding during their first year will not receive scholarship support in the second. The notable exception is the school's prestigious Fried Fellowships. You will receive information in the fall term of your second year.

SAI MBA Fellowships: Student Agencies, Inc. (SAI) is America's oldest independent student-run organization. Its primary mission is to offer Cornell undergraduate students hands-on experience at managing real businesses with the potential to significantly offset their tuition. SAI is composed of seven different businesses focused primarily on serving students' needs. Each year, SAI offers two second-year MBA students fellowships to serve as mentors to the undergraduate business managers. Special consideration is given to applicants with interests, skills, and experience in strategy or management consulting. If you have questions about the SAI fellowships, please call 607 272-2000 extension 16, or see www.studentagencies.com.

International Students
With the current economic crisis we are all facing at this time the only US loan option available to international students is with a credit-worthy US citizen cosigner or US permanent resident cosigner. The Johnson School is currently investigating loan options for international students without a U.S. cosigner and will provide information as it evolves. Current US Loans options with cosigner (but not limited to):

  1. Citibank offers a loan program for international students with a credit-worthy U.S. citizen cosigner or U.S. permanent resident cosigner. The rate is determined by the cosigner's credit history. Visit their website at CitiAssist® Loans
  2. Sallie Mae Premier MBA Loans are available for international students with a credit-worthy U.S. citizen cosigner or U.S. permanent resident cosigner. Visit their website at http://www.salliemae.com/
