NCC 502 - Microeconomics for Management

Professor Michael Waldman

How to Exempt Micro
The only way to gain exemption from the microeconomics core course requirement is to take and pass the exemption examination.

Note that the microeconomics core requirement must be completed by the end of a student's first semester at the school. This means that NCC 502, or the exemption exam, must be passed by the end of the student's first semester.

About the Course and Examination
The goal of the microeconomics core course in the Johnson School is to make you the master of a small number of core economic principles that will help you understand and predict behavior in a variety of environments. You can expect not only to learn the tools of economic analysis you will encounter in other core courses and electives, but also to develop your intuition about how markets actually work in practice.

The microeconomics exemption examination will be a multiple choice test of knowledge of the basic principles of microeconomics. Students with a strong and current working knowledge at the level corresponding to an intermediate microeconomics course should have a good chance of passing the exemption examination.

Results of the Exam
(Pending full faculty confirmation) For each student, the two possible results of the examination are:

  1. Fail: student is required to take the course
  2. Exempt: student passed the exam and is not required to take additional classes in this field.

In no case will credit be given for an exempt course. With permission of the core course instructor, a student may choose to take the core course (for a letter grade or on a S/U basis) even after passing an exemption exam.
