The only way to exempt the Managing Operations core requirement is to take the exemption examination. Students in the two-year program may take the examination only at the beginning of their Spring semester.
The examination is brief, covering topics relevant to Operations Management including analyzing process flows, quality management, inventory control, linear programming, simulation, and other relevant topics. A sample exemption examination is on reserve in the Management Library.
A Sample Exam available in electronic form [12k, 2 pages] (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader).
For each student, the three possible results of the examination are:
- Fail: student is required take the course
- Exempt with substitution: student may either take the core course or an approved substitute to fulfill the core requirement.
- Exempt: student passed the exam and is not required to take additional classes in this field.
In no case will credit be given for an exempt course. With permission of the core course instructor, a student may choose to take the core course (for a letter or on a S/U basis) even after passing an exemption exam.
Students who want to refresh their skills prior to the examination should consider reviewing the textbooks for the course (or their equivalent): Managing Business Process Flows, by R. Anupindi et. al., (Prentice Hall, 1999) and Chapters 2, 3, and 13 of Spreadsheet Modeling and Decision Analysis (2nd ed.) by C. T. Ragsdale (Southwestern, 1998).
