The Program for Leadership
Overview
When GE CEO Jeff Immelt came to help us celebrate our twentieth anniversary, he talked about how the world is changing and what is now being required of leaders. One of his cornerstone concepts: "we need people who can combine passion with process." That notion resonates with us.
Here at the Johnson School, we think about leaders in terms of "chemistry." Catalysts are agents that precipitate or modify chemical reactions. And that's how we prepare leaders - to become agents who, through their unique blend of skills, are able to create, transform and sustain successful organizations. They fuse passion with process. They make a real impact. How do we accomplish that?
One factor in our success is choosing the right ingredients -- selecting MBA candidates with innate drive, vision, collaborative instincts, and other inherent talents that, combined with the skills they develop here, will enable them to rise to the top. Through our Roy H. Park Leadership Fellows Program, we support 25 - 35 outstanding candidates who show promise of becoming world-class leaders. Park Fellows receive full tuition plus a generous stipend for two years, in return for service to the school or the greater Ithaca community.
The other critical factor is our particular approach to developing leaders here at the Johnson School. What distinguish our program for leadership from those of other top business schools are:
- our clearly defined Johnson School Leadership Model, with unique emphasis on personal mastery of leadership skills,
- our performance-learning approach to honing leadership and other business skills, and
- our integration of leadership development throughout the entire MBA learning experience.
All MBA students undertake a blend of theoretical and experiential coursework directly focused on helping them to better understand and develop their own leadership skills and analytical thinking abilities. Those who choose to further develop their leadership capabilities may do so through our Leadership Focus, a flexible curriculum of traditional and experiential coursework.
In addition, within our intense, collaborative Johnson School environment, we provide unusually abundant opportunities for students to expand their leadership experience and practice their skills through coursework, Johnson School student clubs & organizations, Cornell University activities, and external organizations. Our students seek, create, and develop a remarkable range of leadership learning experiences of their own. These reflect a wealth of catalytic behaviors and the results that such leadership can yield.
