Glen W. S. Dowell
Assistant Professor of Management and Organizations
Glen Dowell's research considers how firms interact with their physical, competitive, and institutional environments. In recent publications he has investigated factors that affect the evolution of standards, how the emergence of standards affects firms' survival prospects, and how volatility in demand affects firm investment in international markets.
Professor Dowell's current research is focused upon two related issues. First, he is involved in a long-term project that seeks to understand factors affecting firms' environmental performance, using the EPA's Toxic Release Inventory. In the first paper from this project, he is investigating the role of knowledge transfer in acquisitions in affecting environmental performance. Second, he is exploring the effect of institutions on organizational formation and technological transformation. This research ranges from conceptual and qualitative research to empirical investigation of the effects of institutional change on entrepreneurship.
Professor Dowell's work has been published in Management Science, Organization Studies, Advances in Strategic Management, Strategic Management Journal, and Organization Science (forthcoming). He is on the editorial review board of Organization Science and is a member of the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Society. Teaching interests involve environmental strategy and sustainability, organizational change, and global business issues.
