Gary Katzenstein's interests span the intersection of three areas: organizational behavior, information systems, and international business, with particular expertise in Asia, where he was involved with Asian businesses and cultures for over a decade. He lived and worked in Japan as a Luce Scholar, in South Korea as a business consultant, and spent nearly nine years in Hong Kong as a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). While at HKUST he taught management and information technology, including international management and strategy, knowledge management, organizational behavior, and various topics on information systems and e-commerce. He received over 18 teaching commendations at HKUST, as well as the school's Teaching Innovation and best MBA professor award. Rounding out his training experience in Asia, he has guest lectured at Nanjing University, East China Normal University, Renmin University, and the Hanoi School of Business.

As a consultant, Katzenstein has helped clients to strategically manage cultural differences in business, improve cross-cultural communication, and gain better perspective and cohesion when working together with people from different cultures. A partial list of clients Katzenstein has consulted for include the Carnegie-Bosch Institute, Cathay Pacific Airways, the Conference Board, Walt Disney, Matsushita, W.L. Gore, Underwriters Laboratories, the Princeton Review, Smart Communications, and Mars. He is the author of Funny Business: An Outsider's Year in Japan, as well as numerous articles about Japanese business. With languages as a hobby, he speaks some Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish. He has traveled for business and pleasure to 25 countries.

Katzenstein holds a PhD in organizational behavior from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management. He also holds a master's degree in computer science from UCLA, and an BS in computer science from Brown University.
