Jan H. Suwinski
Senior Lecturer of Operations Management
Jan H. Suwinski is Professor of Business Operations at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he teaches in the Semester in Strategic Operations Immersion course, as well as courses in Strategy and Strategic Alliances. Suwinski was presented the Russell Distinguished Teaching Award in June, 2006.
Suwinski joined the Johnson School Faculty in 1997, after almost 32 years with Corning Incorporated where he held a variety of management positions in several technology-based businesses. From 1990-1996, he was Executive Vice President of the Opto-Electronics Group, with responsibility for all of Corning's fiber optic based businesses. The Group had 13 plants in eight countries, and his Telecommunications Products Division won the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in 1995.
During his career, Suwinski was responsible for 10 Corning joint ventures. From 1992-1996, he was Chairman of Siecor Corporation, a $1B joint venture with Siemens. Prior roles at Corning included Senior Vice President-Telecommunications Products Division, Vice President and Area Manager for Asia, and Vice President of Corning Latin America/Asia Pacific.
Suwinski currently serves on the Boards of Tellabs, Inc., Thor Industries, Inc., ACI Worldwide, IVANS, Inc. and The Sentry Group. He previously served on the Boards of Cray Research, Armco, Inc. and Ohio Casualty Group. He also served on the Board of the Telecommunications Industries Association (TIA), and was Chairman of its Fiber Optics Division from 1987-1996.
Suwinski has a BME ('64) and MBA ('65) from Cornell University. He completed the Executive Development Program at Columbia University in 1983. He currently serves on the Advisory Councils of the Johnson School and the College of Engineering at Cornell.
Jan and his wife Susan live on a farm in Ithaca, NY. Jan plays polo, and is the Secretary/Treasurer and Club Delegate to the US Polo Association for the Central New York Polo Club. In April, 2006, Jan was elected to the Cornell Polo Wall of Honor.
