James R. Detert

Professor Detert's research focuses on three topics: 1) the antecedents, processes, and outcomes of improvement-oriented voice from subordinates to authorities in work organizations; 2) leadership processes, behaviors, and outcomes; and 3) ethical decision making and behavior, particularly the sociocognitive processes and mechanisms of moral disengagement. His research and consulting experiences on these and other topics range across a variety of high-technology and service-oriented industries as well as public sector institutions like K-12 education. His research has appeared in the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Operations Management, and Harvard Business Review. Detert received his MA in sociology and PhD in organizational behavior from Harvard University. He also holds an MBA from the University of Minnesota and a BBA from the University of Wisconsin. He came to Cornell in 2007 after spending four years as an assistant professor at the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University.
