Cornell University The Johnson School at Cornell University

The business of life
At the Johnson School, there's a lot more to life than courses and business cases.

Explore Cornell, the largest Ivy League university, and one of the world's top research institutions. Whether you're interested in international relations, astronomy, foreign languages, or horticulture, you'll find unbelievable resources in hundreds of subjects.

And discover the city of Ithaca, one of the most livable places in the country. A friendly and welcoming community offers lots of great restaurants, pubs, museums, natural- and ethnic-foods shops, and artisan galleries. You'll find plenty of activities to fit your lifestyle, whether you're single or starting a family.

If you're a nature lover, you'll soon see that "Ithaca is gorges" - and waterfalls, and lakes, and mountains. You'll find extraordinary opportunities for hiking, skiing, sailing, kayaking, fishing, swimming and cycling - as well as walking your dog! Here are some recent "best of" lists that praised Ithaca:

Life in Ithaca
Why go to a business school that's not in a metropolitan hub? Well - because it's the Johnson School at Cornell, and because it's in Ithaca!

The school itself is unique, of course, but so are the community and surrounding area. With a regional population of just under 100,000, Ithaca packs a cultural and intellectual wallop. In addition to the long list of cultural and sports events sponsored by Cornell and Ithaca College, the community boasts several professional theater companies, an orchestra, opera company, multiple art galleries, and sizeable population of highly creative artists working in virtually every medium. Clubs, coffee houses, jazz bars, restaurants and shops provide plenty of entertainment and atmosphere.

Nestled at the base of Cayuga Lake in New York's Finger Lakes Wine Country, Cornell sits in the midst of great natural beauty. Gorges, hanging valleys, and deep lakes carved out by Ice-Age glaciers form a terrain of rolling hills covered with vineyards, meadows, and forests. Hiking, skiing, snowboarding, rowing, and sailing are as much a part of life here as fine dining, wine tasting and cultural events. Whatever most people want from a city, they can find here, too. And the good news is - they'll also find a world of beauty and activity not available in any city.

We realize, however, that the corporations that attract many MBAs are based in major metropolitan areas. So we are aggressive in our efforts to ensure plenty of contact between our students and people from the organizations where they're likely to work. We regularly bring industry leaders and experts to campus. Bringing them here results in an additional advantage: deeper levels of contact. When speakers come to the Johnson School, they generally don't rush right back to the office - they stay and talk. We also make an extraordinary effort to bring recruiters to campus - in fact, our Career Management Center is consistently rated within the top five in the nation.

But we also push our students to get out into the world. And if the world is not quite at our doorstep, it's not very far away, either. We're within four hours of Manhattan by car. In addition to the Ithaca Airport, we have easy access flights from Syracuse and Elmira-Corning Airports - and we can reach all of these, and get through their short lines - faster and more easily than most city-dwellers can get to and through their mega-airports!
