Who We Are
Johnson School Long-Range Plan 2004-2009
The Johnson School at Cornell University-we are a premier, Ivy League general management school. Deliberately small and extremely selective, we are a diverse community of exceptional colleagues embedded within the largest of the Ivy League universities. We produce leaders as catalysts -- individuals who make a real impact on their organizations and beyond.
We are privileged to be part of one of the world's important universities, with a unique history. We take seriously our responsibility to further Cornell's legacy of transforming visionary ideas into applied innovation for the public good. The domain of the Johnson School is that not only of business, but of leadership in all organizations and society as a whole.
Our core strength is our faculty; it is they who contribute to the world's knowledge and teach talented individuals how to become leaders in multiple venues. Here at the Johnson School, we deliberately bring together researchers and practitioners in a dynamic environment where their innovative ideas and emerging theories are put to the ultimate test: reality.
Three attributes distinguish the Johnson School from our peer business schools:
- Our Cornell connections provide access to a depth and breadth of distinguished research and teaching, and a vast, worldwide network of alumni, faculty, and colleagues.
- Our "performance learning" approach sets us apart; our students use defined frameworks and analytical tools, combined with plentiful expert feedback to solve real problems in real organizations.
- In our intense, collaborative community, students experience concentrated teamwork and networking that foster innovation, deliver results, and build their confidence to take appropriate risks.
Where We're Headed and Why
In the first few years of the 21st century, we have already witnessed several "revolutions" - dramatic changes and unprecedented volatility. World-changing events have become daily realities, and in their wake, new trends are materializing overnight. Such dramatic changes in the marketplace demand equally bold changes in top business schools charged with preparing future business leaders.
As a forward-thinking learning institution, we are determined to build on our past successes, but at the same time constantly reinvent our programs to respond to -- and to anticipate -- these changes. We must rethink how we prepare students to become leaders. Our graduates will be in high demand if - but only if - they prove their ability to spark change, galvanize teams, and deliver breakthrough results not only for their own organizations, but also within society as a whole.
