Johnson School partners with leaders in sustainability research space
Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability (ARCS) formed to advance research on corporate sustainability issues
November 5, 2009 | Ithaca, NY | Cornell's Johnson School has announced a partnership with other top schools, forming the Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability (ARCS).
The announcement was made October 29th during the third annual Sustainability and Renewable Energy Forum at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. Professor Michael Lenox, Faculty Director of ARCS shared the news of the new organization.
"ARCS is a consortium of schools and institutes at leading universities with a mission of advancing rigorous academic research on corporate sustainability issues. We will provide data, tools and networking opportunities to researchers who are developing greater understanding of the opportunities and limits of policies and strategies to create sustainable businesses," said Lenox.
Founding ARCS members include, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Western Ontario, Virginia and Yale. The organization will sponsor events such as an annual research conference, an annual doctoral student Sustainability Academy, and various workshops. For example, ARCS will host a January 2010 workshop on Data Needs for Accelerating Progress on Corporate Sustainability in Washington, D.C., funded by the National Science Foundation.
The announcement of the launch of ARCS was followed by a presentation by Ray Anderson, Founder and Chairman of Interface, Inc., the world's largest manufacturer of modular carpet. Anderson discussed the company's challenges and accomplishments related to Mission Zero, its goal to produce zero waste or harmful emissions, use 100% renewable energy, and achieve 100% recycling of raw materials in its operations.
