Johnson School Students Host Camp $tart-Up from June 21 to 28, 2008

Building business and leadership skills in young women ages 13 to 19

April 23, 2008 | Ithaca, NY | The Johnson School will host its seventh annual Camp $tart-Up, an eight-day camp for young women ages 13 to 19, from June 21-28, 2008 on the Cornell University campus. Camp $tart-Up is a student run-program organized by five female MBA students. The students are involved in all aspects of the camp from coordinating leadership activities to planning the camp's promotional materials, and working alongside campers as mentors and counselors.

Exposing young women to the fundamentals of business, campers learn about several key business areas including marketing, finance, and research. While at the camp, the young women interact closely with current MBA students, professors, alumni, and local businesspeople to foster the campers' capabilities in leadership and teamwork. In addition, the campers will have the opportunity to work with visiting business professionals such as Kimberly Mack of Abercrombie & Fitch, Janet Carr (MBA '90) of Coach, Inc., and My Luu (MBA '04) of IBM.

This year's MBA students (all class of 2008) include Camille Etienne, Ritika Gill, Adrienne Martinez, Kate Tansey, and Surabhi Varshney. Each student plans to leverage her own business expertise and experiences to teach and empower the young women to become successful business leaders. Camille Etienne's interest in business dated back to her teenage years, and she is eager to share her knowledge and experiences with this year's campers.

Throughout most MBA programs, including the Johnson School, approximately 30 percent of students enrolled are women. The Johnson School and its Office of Diversity and Inclusion hope the camp will increase the number of women in business schools by teaching them business and leadership skills at a younger age.
