Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Management recognized as a top researcher at the Johnson School
May 30, 2008 | Ithaca, NY | The Johnson School conferred its highest faculty research honor on Elizabeth "Beta" Mannix, before a commencement gathering of 400 graduates and 1,800 friends and family. Mannix, the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Management, also serves as director of Cornell University's Institute for the Social Sciences (ISS). The institute was formed in 2004 to encourage collaborations among social scientists across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, to engage the Cornell community in discussions of cutting-edge topics in the social sciences, and to assist departments and programs in attracting and retaining top social science faculty. Mannix was one of the institute's founding faculty members.
In her research, Mannix analyzes topics such as diversity in organizations and teams, power and alliances, negotiation and conflict, and organizational change and renewal.
"This years' winner of the research award is also an outstanding teacher, but she is recognized today for her leading-edge research and her contribution to the research of others," said Joseph Thomas, the Anne and Elmer Lindseth Dean, in conferring the award. "Her work has been cited by other scholars hundreds of times. In her role as director of the ISS she enables and contributes to the research of scholars across Cornell."
The Faculty Research Award is given to a member or members of the Johnson School faculty each year, in recognition of outstanding research contributions and achievements. Mannix joins a roster of 12 distinguished recipients of the award. She was also honored for her teaching by the Executive MBA Class of 2001, with its Globe Award for Teaching Excellence.
Mannix earned her PhD in social and organizational psychology in 1989 from the University of Chicago. She went on to teach there, as well as Columbia University, before joining the Johnson School faculty in 1999. Her research has been published in the top journals in her field, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Academy of Management Journal.
