Johnson School Faculty are 'Prolific Authors' in Finance and Accounting
Recent studies of academic publishing in finance and accounting name six to the top 50
March 23, 2009 | Ithaca, NY | Johnson School faculty have been named to two lists of the most prolific authors in accounting and finance. Jean L. Heck of Saint Joseph's University surveyed the accounting and finance literature to develop lists of the most prolific authors in each discipline. Three Johnson School faculty were included in the 50 most prolific accounting authors and four were found to be among the 50 most prolific finance authors, including professor Harold Bierman who made both lists. Several other Johnson School faculty also made the lists.
Jean Heck's paper "Most Prolific Authors in the Accounting Literature Over the Past Half-Century: 1959-2008" develops a list of the most prolific authors in the leading accounting journals including: Accounting, Organizations and Society; Accounting Review; Journal of Accounting and Economics: Journal of Accounting Research; and Contemporary Accounting Research. Johnson School faculty included in the top 50 are: Robert Libby (tied for second), Harold Bierman (tied for 30), and Mark Nelson (tied for 34).
In a second study, Heck worked with Philip L. Cooley of Trinity University on "Most Prolific Authors in the Finance Literature: 1959-2008." The authors examined the most frequently appearing authors in the top seven finance journals including: Financial Management; Journal of Banking and Finance; Journal of Finance; Journal of Financial Economics; Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis; Journal of Money, Credit and Banking; and Review of Financial Studies. Several Johnson School faculty are on the list, including four among the top 50, namely: Robert Jarrow (tied for 19), Maureen O'Hara (tied for 21), Roni Michaely (tied for 30), and Hal Bierman (tied for 33).
"The Johnson School prides itself on innovative thought leadership that adds to the academic literature and impacts business practice," said Joseph Thomas, Anne and Elmer Lindseth Dean. "Our robust program helps to enrich our students' educational experiences by exposing them to the very latest in academic thought, and the cutting edge of business practice. It's an honor to have six faculty members named among the top 50 of these lists and to have Hal Bierman on both lists is a tribute to the impact he has made over his impressive career at the Johnson School."
