September 11, 2007 | Ithaca, NY | The Alumni Affairs and Development Committee of the Johnson School Advisory Council is pleased to announce the inaugural winners of the Samuel C. Johnson Distinguished Service Award and the Robert J. Swieringa Young Alumni Service Award. The former honors alumni who graduated 20 or more years ago, and the latter honors those who are less than 20 years post graduation.
The recipients will be honored on October 5, 2007, at the Advisory Council's fall meeting in the New York City area.
Richard A. Marin '75, MBA '76, receives the Samuel C. Johnson Distinguished Service Award for his long-term volunteer activities across a broad spectrum of alumni engagement opportunities. A member of the Johnson School's Advisory Council who has given his time generously to the Johnson School over the three decades since earning his MBA, he currently serves as the Johnson School's Executive-in-Residence in Asset Management. He also serves on the advisory boards of the Cayuga MBA Fund, the Parker Center for Investment Research, and the BRV Fund. He has been a frequent guest lecturer at the school, has actively recruited Johnson School students, and served as chair of the New York Steering Committee, developing events aimed at young alumni. He opens his Ithaca house to Johnson School and Cornell University events, and served for eight years as chairman of the school's Annual Fund, making him the longest-serving chairman to date.
Kenneth W. Gurrola, MBA '95, receives the Robert J. Swieringa Young Alumni Service Award for his exemplary commitment to the Johnson School and its alumni since his graduation. Gurrola was instrumental in reviving the Johnson School Club of New York. Gurrola hosted the inaugural "Business of..." event while working as manager of quality and risk management at Ernst & Young. He also served on the Dean's Leadership Committee, a group of select alumni who raise funds by building one-on-one relationships with their Johnson School peers.
