Cornell's Johnson School to Host 4th MBA Stock Pitch Competition

MBAs Will Choose Next Big Stock in Front of Wall Street Analysts

November 1, 2005, Ithaca, New York The nation's top MBA programs will select the hottest stocks of the year at the Fourth Annual MBA Stock Pitch Competition November 2-4, 2005.

The competition gathers the top MBA students showcasing their stock-picking skills in front of a panel of Wall Street money managers. The event challenges teams of finance students from elite universities to prepare and present "short" or "long" recommendations for what they consider the next year's big performers. In doing so, they often select great investment opportunities.

In past years, the MBA Stock Pitch winners have made selections that have outperformed the overall market. For example, in the last event held in April, 2005, choices included: Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold (NYSE: FCX), trading around $40 in April and recently closed near $50 in October and Barrick Gold (nyse: ABX) was trading around $24 in April and recently closed above $28 in October.

Held at Cornell University's Johnson School in Ithaca, New York, the challenge includes 48-hours of intense competition for the 8 three-student teams from around the country including:

Cornell University (Johnson)
Duke University (Fuqua)
New York University (Stern)
Northwestern University (Kellogg)
University of Chicago
University of Michigan (Ross)
University of Rochester (Simon)
University of Virginia (Darden)

Teams will meet at Cornell's Parker Center, the Johnson School's premier research facility, and will be given stocks to research using the latest financial tools including StockVal, FactSet, First Call and many others. The intense competition replicates the fast-paced, demanding real-life experience of analysts and asset managers. Judges include top executives from Barclays Global Investors, Fidelity Investments, Morgan Stanley, Sandler O'Neill Asset Management, Wellington Management, a longtime veteran of Merrill Lynch and TIAA-CREF.

The teams arrive late Wednesday, November 2 and the research component begins early Thursday, November 3. After conducting research all day and night on a particular stock, teams will present "long" or "short" recommendations in front of the Wall Street professionals on Friday morning, November 4. Eight teams get pared down to the "Final Four" by lunch. The winner will be announced at 3:30 p.m. EST.

Participants have graduated to become analysts and fund managers on Wall Street. Previous finalists of the Stock Pitch are now working at Lehman Brothers, UBS, Putnam Investments, Standard Pacific and other investment companies.
