Northwestern Wins 4th MBA Stock Pitch Competition

University of Rochester (Simon) and Duke (Fuqua) Place Second and Third

November 4, 2005, Ithaca, New York The winner of the Fourth Annual MBA Stock Pitch Competition held at the Johnson School at Cornell University has been announced and Northwestern has earned top honors. The team of Steve Kalter, Rahul Seshan and Lance Garrison out performed teams from eight other top MBA schools to win $3000 and the competition's coveted gold cup. Their final presentation focused on Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation (NYSE:COG), which came with a "short" recommendation.

The competition brought top MBA students to Ithaca to showcase their stock-picking skills in front of a panel of Wall Street money managers. The event challenged teams of finance students to prepare and present "short" or "long" recommendations for Bowater, and various stocks from the Financials and Energy sectors.

Teams worked nearly around the clock Cornell's Parker Center, the Johnson School's premier research facility, and completed their research using the latest financial tools including StockVal, FactSet, First Call and many others.

The intense competition replicated the fast-paced, demanding real-life experience of analysts and asset managers. Judges included top executives from Barclays Global Investors, Fidelity Investments, Morgan Stanley, Sandler O'Neill Asset Management, Wellington Management, a longtime veteran of Merrill Lynch and TIAA-CREF.

The teams arrived late Wednesday, November 2 and the research component of the competition started early Thursday, November 3. After conducting research all day and night on particular stocks, teams presented their selections during the day Friday. Nine teams were pared down to the "Final Four" by lunch and those four presentations occurred mid-afternoon.

Past participants have graduated to become analysts and fund managers on Wall Street. Previous finalists of the Stock Pitch are now working at Lehman Brothers, UBS, Putnam Investments, Standard Pacific and other investment companies.
