Worldcom Whistleblowers Cynthia Cooper and Glyn Smith to Lecture at Johnson School

Public Invited to Evening Presentation on Ethics and Leadership

April 20, 2004, Ithaca, New York The Johnson Graduate School of Management is pleased to welcome to the Statler Hotel Auditorium at 6 pm on Thursday, April 22nd Cynthia Cooper and Glyn Smith of WorldCom (now MCI). Cooper and Smith, who played key roles in uncovering the largest corporate fraud in U.S history, will present a public talk entitled "Navigating the Storm: Lessons from WorldCom."

"Our students and the public will be exposed to the perspectives of these two individuals who have a special-and sometimes hard-won-understanding of the ethical issues that confront business decision-makers," said Dana Radcliffe, an ethics and leadership professor at the Johnson School. "The story of Ms. Cooper and Mr. Smith is truly a 'profile in courage'-not to mention integrity and tenacity. As they defied orders to stop, their secret investigation brought to light monumental deception at the telecommunications giant, whose rapid growth in the 1990s made its stock the most widely held in the country."

Ms. Cooper is vice president of Internal Audit at MCI, and Glyn Smith is a director in the Audit Department. In recognition of her efforts in unraveling the WorldCom fraud, Ms. Cooper was named one of TIME's three "Persons of the Year" in 2002.

Cooper and Smith will be holding a private lecture earlier in the day only for Johnson School students. These speakers are being brought to campus through the support of the Citigroup Leadership Initiatives Grant.

The Johnson School is Cornell's graduate school of management. Founded in 1946, and located at the center of one of the world's top research institutions-the largest in the Ivy League-the school's programs include MBA and doctoral degrees, an executive MBA, and a variety of customized executive education programs.
