"Market Chaos: What's Going on Out There?"
The stock market is gyrating, the hedge funds are reeling, credit lines are being called in, the central banks are being pressed into action - What is going on out there? And how did it come about? "Markets in Chaos" was the focus of a talk given by Professor Maureen O'Hara, recognized as a leading expert on financial markets, in the first installment of the Johnson School's fall Distinguished Speaker Series. More than 200 Johnson School students, faculty and staff filled the classroom in Sage Hall B09 Sept. 4 to hear O'Hara speak. In her talk, O'Hara traced the roots of the subprime mortgage collapse, explained how it led to the liquidity crisis in the financial markets, and outlined what central banks can do (and not do) to sort it all out. The big question that looms now: Will all this turmoil lead to a recession? O'Hara characterized her outlook as "Cautiously optimistic - but stay tuned."
