Marketing Symposium 2007: Marketing for a Sustainable Future
Introduction by Professor Doug Stayman
In May 2007, American Express invited its card members to participate in a unique online initiative called The Members Project (www.membersproject.com) that enabled them to come together as a community by submitting and sharing their project ideas for making a positive impact in the world. In August, after 186,508 card members registered with more than 7,000 project ideas and cast 162,087 votes, American Express announced the winning project idea: "Children's Safe Drinking Water." They then awarded $2 million dollars to provide millions of children in the developing world with safe drinking water to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the organization selected to fulfill the idea.
