Professors Mark Milstein and Stuart Hart were awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation's Innovation and Organizational Change Program from 2002-2006 to develop a better understanding of organizational innovation and change processes. The research was focused on how firms effectively develop, implement, and diffuse innovations to affect organizational change when entering new markets.

The research enabled the generation of theoretical models regarding the causes of initiative success and failure and has provided a foundation for further work on base-of-the-pyramid enterprise development. It also has been critical in the development of new knowledge and insights into the organizational processes required for entering low-income markets in a way that generates organizational change and innovation.
