The SGE Club sets its 2012 priorities: strengthening Johnson’s professional network, preparing for a new Dean, and bringing together sustainably minded Cornellians.

The Sustainable Global Enterprise (SGE) Club — whose mission is to prepare students for purpose-driven careers through networking, education, and institutional support — has had a busy 2012 so far, with a wide range of initiatives planned for the remainder of the spring and fall.

Below is an update of ongoing Club activities:

‘Fireside Chats’ – In February, the SGE Club kicked off an intimate speaker series, providing private networking opportunities for MBAs. Speakers have included Selina Matus of Sustainable Travel International, Taryn Goodman of RSF Social Finance, and Eva Koehler of One Acre Fund. Up next: Paul Lightfoot of BrightFarms.

Sustainability Social – Our inter-school mixer and career-speed-dating event, hosted at the Cornell Big Red Barn on February 28, attracted more than 60 graduate and professional students, with interests ranging from law to botany to material science. This is the first of many activities to bring together Cornell’s sustainability community.

Incoming Dean – As we prepare for the arrival of Dean Designate Soumitra Dutta, the SGE Club will form a working group of students and alumni to present our vision for the future of sustainability education at Johnson, and to provide recommendations for attracting and supporting purpose-driven students.

Curriculum – Working with the Dean’s Office, faculty, and the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise (CSGE), we continue to look for new ways to infuse sustainability into the core curriculum and to strengthen elective offerings, so that Johnson remains at the cutting edge of sustainability education.

Storybook – To create a lasting resource for incoming students, this year we will begin to profile the internship and career searches of first- and second-year students, and compile them in a Storybook that will inform future students to job search tips, recommended classes, and more.

Destination Johnson – During DJ, the SGE Club will host a series of events to greet and inform admitted students. Look for us at the Club Fair and the Saturday luncheon. Join us for the SGE career panel Saturday morning and our social on Friday night from 9pm to 11pm at The Chapter House.

The bullets above represent just a sampling of the work the SGE Club is doing to support purpose-driven students at Johnson. As we look forward to the fall semester, we are excited to:

  • co-host the 3rd Annual Johnson Energy Connection
  • help organize a trip in collaboration with CSGE to the 2012 Net Impact Conference in Baltimore
  • organize the first-ever mixer for sustainable MBA leaders throughout the Northeast region
  • most importantly, welcome and support another class of sustainably minded MBAs to Johnson
