Celebrating Leaders in Sustainability at Johnson
by Monica Touesnard, Associate Director (6/18/13)
Continuing the trend of excellence in the SGE program, several students were recognized for their achievement and leadership in Sustainable Global Enterprise (SGE) while at Johnson.
Graduation weekend was a time for celebration and provided the opportunity to recognize leaders from the class of 2013. Continuing the trend of excellence in the SGE program, several students were recognized for their achievement and leadership in Sustainable Global Enterprise (SGE) while at Johnson. Two awards are given annually in honor of Samuel C. Johnson, whose own vision and leadership led to the establishment of the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Johnson. Award recipients were determined by an SGE alumni selection committee from nominations received from students, faculty and staff.
Duncan Cooper was the recipient of this year’s Samuel C. Johnson Award in Sustainable Global Enterprise for Individual Leadership. This award recognizes an outstanding student who has demonstrated excellence, leadership, and/or scholarship in the area of Sustainable Global Enterprise while at Johnson. Duncan worked on numerous sustainability projects that benefitted the Johnson and the Cornell community such as Johnson Energy Connections. He demonstrated leadership in sustainable business in his classes, his extracurricular activities, and in his interactions with other Cornell students serving as a resource for students interested in sustainability issues, specifically in renewable energy.
The Samuel C. Johnson Award in Sustainable Global Enterprise for Team Impact recognizes an outstanding team of students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership and made a lasting contribution that helped shape the sustainable global enterprise program at Johnson. This year the award was presented to Bret Collazzi, Nora Hansanugrum, and Jessica Saturley. They were recognized for their success in organizing the first annual SGE club trek to Boston and Burlington.
The trek provided unprecedented opportunities for club members to explore a variety of companies operating at the nexus of business and sustainability. The mix of companies, ranging from Seventh Generation and Ben & Jerry’s to New Balance and EnerNOC, catered to the diversity of interests represented in the club. Additionally, their attention to detail made logistics as smooth as possible, allowing the trip to focus on educating participants and career building. Networking events in each city enabled club members to have quality face time with high-level sustainability professionals. Connections made during the treks have had a direct impact on members’ success in securing employment. By organizing the SGE club trek, Bret, Nora and Jessica initiated an event that others will strive to replicate in the future – this is the definition of a legacy!
Congratulations to all Samuel C. Johnson Sustainable Global Enterprise Award winners!
