The Frontier Markets (FM) Initiative conducts applied research on profitably opening up new mass market opportunities in emerging and developing economies.

The goal of FM is to build corporations’ and entrepreneurs’ capacity to profitably serve these markets by deepening the field’s understanding of key success drivers, and creating innovation and management tools effective in meeting the unique challenges they present.

FM responds to a growing interest among multinational corporations and social entrepreneurs, more broadly, to profitably serve the 4.5 billion consumers at the bottom of the global income pyramid—a largely untapped consumer segment whose aggregate purchasing power is valued at $5 trillion by the International Finance Corporation, the World Bank’s private sector lending arm.

FM is headed by Dr. Erik Simanis, an authority on innovation and go-to-market strategies for creating and shaping new mass markets in emerging and frontier economies. Erik has extensive field experience, having guided start-ups and corporate new venture teams in Eastern Europe, Africa, South Asia, and South America over the past 20 years. His work is published in leading management journals, including the Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Sloan Management Review, and the journal Innovations.
