Mon’troduction

The world has changed so much since the Great Recession that the playbook for business in the 21st century is no longer relevant just eight years after. Businesses now require a new leadership structure based on character, sense of purpose, focus on people, and community. These convictions, coupled with the need to disrupt my business biases, informed my choice to take on the challenge of earning my MBA in the Executive MBA Americas program at Cornell University and Queen’s University.

The context and foundation of our first residential session in Ithaca, New York and Kingston, Ontario focused on leadership and managing teams. One of the takeaways from Peter Richardson’s class, Role of the General Manager, and his joint text with Elspeth Murray, Fast-Forward, was that the first 100 days in a new position are the most critical in driving change in an organization. This theme, which is relevant in our currently changing global economic reality, was also apparent in Beta Mannix’s course, Managing & Leading Organizations.

After the first residential session in my EMBA America’s journey, some things are already apparent. First, most of my business models have been disrupted; second, I continue to be influenced by more than 160 executives in the program who are constantly debating what should be done in a business situation; and lastly, I’ve tapped into a community of lifelong cohorts—and that includes Clifford, team Canada’s dog.

My journey in the EMBA Americas program has only just begun, and this is just my mon’troduction! I look forward to sharing great moments and reflections during the next few months.
