Sage Hall

Built as the first women’s dormitory at Cornell in 1875, Sage Hall is now the hub for the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. In the late 1990s, a $38 million renovation transformed the residential Gothic-style building into an academic instruction facility. The building was transformed while maintaining the historical aspects of the space.

Glass-Ceilinged Atrium Brings in Nature

The Sage Hall atrium glass ceiling was inspired by the main exhibition hall at the Oxford University Museum. The addition of the ceiling changed the inner courtyard into a covered atrium for use in all seasons. The soaring glass ceiling provides a light, airy space adding natural ambiance year-round. The natural light bounces off the walls providing a natural, calm setting for Johnson students to congregate.

Towering Above the Competition

The original Sage Hall dormitory included a Gothic-style central tower. The iconic tower was removed in 1950. As part of the renovations preparing the building for use by Johnson, the central tower was restored to its former glory. The renovated tower and original exterior walls act as reminders of the historic building even as modern touches were added to increase the functionality of the space.
