Professor Nagesh Gavirneni named the fourth Emerson Professor of Manufacturing Management

Nagesh Gavirneni, Associate Professor of Operations Management at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management, has been appointed as Emerson Professor of Manufacturing Management. The appointment, effective November 1, 2012, will run for three years and reflects Professor Gavirneni’s distinguished service as a leading scholar of manufacturing and operations management.

Professor Gavirneni, an ’89 graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology and a PhD holder from Carnegie Mellon University, ’97, joined the Johnson faculty in June, 2004. Since then, Professor Gavirneni has taught 13 classes and received various honors, including the Clifford H. Whitcomb Faculty Fellowship for 2007-2008; an Emerging Markets Institute (EMI) grant for research on water usage in Indian agriculture; and a grant from the Jeffrey S. Lehman Fund for scholarly exchange with China. In addition, he sits on the editorial boards of four peer-reviewed journals on manufacturing and operations topics and has published 29 peer-reviewed articles.

“Professor Gavirneni is perhaps best known for his work in evaluating the increase in the efficiency of a supply chain, by sharing information between its levels,” said Soumitra Dutta, Johnson’s dean. “This research has been highly impactful and widely cited by other scholars.”

In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Gavirneni has work experience at Intel, Schlumberger, Maxager Technology, and SmartOps Corp.

Prior Emerson Professor of Manufacturing Management appointees include Vishal Gaur, professor of operations management, Professor Emeritus John O. McClain, and Professor Emeritus Richard Conway.
