The Accelerated Curriculum
The Johnson School one-year Accelerated MBA curriculum demands - and delivers - the rigor, skills, insight, analytical thinking and expansive context that can transform a talented individual into a leader who delivers real impact. Credit for prior work. The Johnson School recognizes Accelerated MBA participants' previous graduate work by granting 15 course credits toward the 60 required for an MBA.
Summer term
The Accelerated MBA program (formerly the Twelve-Month Option) begins in May with an intensive ten-week term.
- Orientation. We provide abundant information about your new home and encourage your involvement in the Johnson School, Cornell, and the surrounding area.
- Core courses. The summer curriculum incorporates most of the required "core" courses: financial accounting, managerial finance, managing and leading in organizations, marketing management, microeconomics for management, and strategy.
- Statistics. Prior study and/or a one-week refresher course enable most Accelerated MBAs to pass a statistics exemption exam and receive course credit for this requirement.
- Professional development. The summer also focuses heavily on teamwork and leadership, strategic thinking, and career preparation.
- Halfway there. By the end of the summer, Accelerated MBA students generally have completed 34 course hours - more than half the number required for graduation the following May.
Fall and spring semesters
In most respects, Accelerated MBA students' experience in the fall and spring terms mirrors that of second-year MBA students.
- Core courses. The remaining core course in managing organizations is taken during the fall semester.
- Electives. Among the benefits of a Johnson School MBA are the rich array of about 80 Johnson School elective courses from which to choose, and the opportunity to add some from Cornell's other outstanding schools and programs.
- Fall semester-long management practicum. We now enhance the Accelerated MBA experience with a package of special electives that provides an experience similar to the two-year program's immersion and internship experiences. This three-course program features a management practicum, during which students work with our consultant in residence on projects with companies of specific interest to Accelerated MBAs, including biotech, technology, finance, and pharmaceutical. Other faculty and a team advisor provide guidance on issues as needed. The practicum project lasts throughout the fall semester and culminates with a two-week internship experience where students conduct interviews, analysis, and group work sessions.
Career management
Even as Accelerated MBAs take on the daily demands of coursework, they also continue to work on their own career plans, with the help of our top-rated Career Management Center. We have further strengthened our career management programs with skills workshops, on-line career development, personal coaching, career work groups, and an Accelerated MBA Industry Day.
Balancing work and life
We also encourage all students to balance work with pleasure and explore multiple avenues for professional and personal growth. Johnson School clubs offer a wide spectrum of activities, from investment and venture capital to ice hockey and wine-tasting. Beyond Cornell, good restaurants, ski and biking trails, and abundant recreational opportunities are part of life in the Finger Lakes region.
Graduation
Twelve months from inception, Accelerated MBAs graduate with the broad business knowledge base and 21st century leadership skills they need to deliver real impact - today and tomorrow.
