Portfolio Director, Skoll Foundation
Alex is Portfolio Director of the Skoll Foundation, a leading private foundation supporting social entrepreneurs and their innovative approaches to addressing the world’s most pressing problems. Alex manages the portfolio team that develops and oversees the grant and investment program for the Foundation.
Alex has spent his entire career investing in and successfully growing entrepreneurs in both for profit and non-profit settings.
Alex has been a senior investment professional at several leading venture capital firms including Noribachi LLC, a Cleantech venture accelerator, and Cleantech venture firm Expansion Capital Partners. He has invested in and guided innovative private companies from seed stage through IPO/acquisition in a variety of technology sectors, including Clean Technology, entertainment and media, web/cloud-based services, enterprise software and communications services.
Previous to Expansion Capital, Alex co-founded and was a partner at Blackwolf Partners, an early stage Cleantech venture capital firm. Alex has also served as a venture investment professional and senior manager at JPMorgan Partners and Hambrecht & Quist. He started his career at the Vietnam Fund Management Company, managing one of the first venture funds in Vietnam based in the firm’s Hong Kong and then Ho Chi Minh City offices.
On the nonprofit side, Alex has served for more than 20 years as Chairman and President of the Excelerate Foundation and its predecessor non-profit organization. Excelerate supports innovative non-profit organizations that initiate positive change and leadership in the areas of social entrepreneurship and community development.
Alex is a member of the Advisory Council of the Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise at Cornell University. Alex often lectures on venture capital financing, entrepreneurship and sustainable technologies.
Alex earned a B.A. degree in International Relations and Asian Studies from Tulane University, studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and holds an MBA from Cornell University.
